Whether it was friends, fellow travellers or local people, everyone spoke about its spiritual significance, strict traditions and unique darshan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Our Day 3 itinerary was centred around this temple, and looking back, it turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences of our Kerala trip. In this article, I&#8217;m sharing everything we experienced\u2014from reaching the temple and following the dress code to the darshan itself and a few practical tips that may help you plan your visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reaching Padmanabhaswamy Temple<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Reaching the temple was quite convenient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">During our visit, our driver was able to drop us almost at the temple entrance. However, we were told that during festivals or peak tourist seasons, vehicles may have to stop approximately <strong>200 metres<\/strong> away, from where visitors can easily walk to the main gate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Good to Know<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">If you&#8217;re travelling with elderly family members, try reaching early in the morning. It not only helps avoid the afternoon heat but may also reduce the walking distance if traffic restrictions are in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who Can Enter the Temple?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">One important point to keep in mind while planning your visit is that <strong>only Hindus are permitted to enter the temple<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">If you&#8217;re travelling with friends or relatives from different faiths, plan your itinerary accordingly so that nobody is caught by surprise at the entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Understanding the Dress Code<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Padmanabhaswamy Temple follows one of the strictest dress codes we came across during our Kerala trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dress Code for Men<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">During our visit:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Men were required to wear a <strong>mundu (dhoti)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The upper body had to remain uncovered while entering the temple.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pants or shorts underneath the mundu were not permitted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The same dress code applied to our son as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dress Code for Women<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Women can enter wearing a saree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">If they are wearing western clothes or other attire, they can wrap themselves with a dhoti or mundu before entering the temple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The same rule applied to our daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Buying a Mundu at the Temple<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Fortunately, you don&#8217;t need to carry a mundu from home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">After depositing your footwear, you&#8217;ll find a counter inside the temple premises where mundus are available for purchase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">During our visit:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Adult mundus were available for <strong>around \u20b9100\u2013\u20b9200<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We purchased mundus for our children for <strong>around \u20b960 each<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">We were also informed that mundus used to be available on rent before COVID, but they are now sold instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Travel Tip from Our Experience<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">We were initially worried because we hadn&#8217;t carried traditional clothes for our children. Thankfully, buying them at the temple was quick and convenient, so there&#8217;s no need to purchase them in advance unless you already own one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Locker Facility<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The temple also provides a paid locker facility where you can safely keep:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mobile phones<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wallets<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bags<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other personal belongings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">There is also a bathing facility available if you wish to freshen up before entering the temple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">We made one small mistake\u2014we left our phones in the vehicle instead of using the locker facility. After completing our visit, we realised we couldn&#8217;t take any family photographs near the temple entrance and had to request another visitor to click one for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Travel Tip from Our Experience<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">If you want photographs before or after your temple visit, use the locker facility instead of leaving your phone in the car. It saves you from unnecessary inconvenience later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our First Impression<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Like many traditional Kerala temples, the entrance itself leaves a lasting impression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The beautifully carved wooden doors and the towering gateway immediately caught our attention. Near the entrance, devotees could also purchase small bottles of oil for offering, which were available for <strong>around \u20b910\u2013\u20b915<\/strong> during our visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Choosing Between the Darshan Queues<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Although we visited during the off-season, there was still a sizeable crowd waiting for darshan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">During our visit, there were two options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>General queue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seva Darshan queue<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The <strong>Seva Darshan<\/strong> cost <strong>around \u20b9500 per person<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">We noticed that only around <strong>10\u201315 devotees<\/strong> were waiting in the Seva queue, while the general queue was considerably longer. Since we were travelling with family, we decided to opt for the Seva Darshan and reached the sanctum in about <strong>15 minutes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Good to Know<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">If you&#8217;re travelling with senior citizens or children and are short on time, the Seva Darshan may be worth considering, depending on the crowd on the day of your visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Unique Three-Door Darshan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The highlight of our visit was undoubtedly the darshan of Lord Padmanabhaswamy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Unlike any temple we had visited before, the idol is so large that it cannot be viewed through a single doorway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Instead, the darshan takes place through <strong>three separate doors<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>From the first door, we could see the head of Lord Vishnu resting on <strong>Sheshnag<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The second door revealed the lotus emerging from the navel, with <strong>Lord Brahma<\/strong> seated on it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The third door offered a view of the feet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Only after looking through all three doors could we appreciate the complete form of the deity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Personally, this was one of the largest idols I have ever seen in any temple. Since we had opted for the Seva Darshan, we were also able to offer our prayers from a closer distance. While leaving, we received lotus flowers as prasadam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting the Krishna Temple<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">After completing the main darshan, we visited the Krishna temple located within the same complex. According to what we learnt during our visit, this temple is believed to be around <strong>7,000 years old<\/strong>, making it even older than the main Padmanabhaswamy Temple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Around the temple are rows of places where devotees can light oil lamps. A local hotelier later told us that these lamps are illuminated together during major festivals and special occasions, creating a magnificent atmosphere inside the temple complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">I can only imagine how beautiful the temple must look when thousands of lamps are lit together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Temple Timings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">During our visit, the temple remained open until <strong>around 12:30 PM<\/strong> and reopened at <strong>around 4:00 PM<\/strong>, similar to several temples we visited across Kerala. We spent <strong>roughly two hours<\/strong> exploring the temple and completing our darshan, excluding any long waiting time in the general queue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Things to Remember Before Visiting<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Before visiting Padmanabhaswamy Temple, keep these points in mind:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list has-medium-font-size\">\n<li>Only Hindus are allowed inside the temple.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow the temple&#8217;s dress code.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Carry some cash if you plan to purchase a mundu or use the locker facility.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mobile phones and cameras are not permitted inside.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep additional time if you&#8217;re planning to join the general queue.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>During festivals, expect larger crowds and possible parking restrictions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our Experience<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Padmanabhaswamy Temple was undoubtedly one of the highlights of our Kerala trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">More than the architecture, what stayed with me was the experience itself\u2014the traditional customs, the discipline followed inside the temple and the unique three-door darshan of Lord Vishnu. With a little preparation regarding the dress code and temple rules, the visit becomes smooth and enjoyable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">If you&#8217;re visiting Thiruvananthapuram, I would certainly recommend including Padmanabhaswamy Temple in your itinerary.
