A day trip from Udaipur to Chittorgarh Fort is a great choice for anyone interested in Rajasthan’s history and Rajput heritage. Chittorgarh is around 115โ117 km from Udaipur, taking approximately 2โ2.5 hours by car. Unlike Kumbhalgarh, Chittorgarh is not a single compact monument. It is a vast 700-acre hilltop fort complex filled with historic palaces, temples, towers, gateways, and ruins.
Because of its size, the best approach is to focus on the major highlights rather than trying to see everything. This guide covers how to plan the trip, fort timings, entry fees, the main attractions, and the best way to explore Chittorgarh comfortably in one day.
๐ฐ Why Visit Chittorgarh Fort?
Chittorgarh Fort is one of the most important historical landmarks in Rajasthan and was the capital of Mewar for centuries. Its palaces, temples, towers, and ruins reflect the region’s long and often turbulent history.
The fort witnessed three major siegesโby Alauddin Khalji in 1303, Bahadur Shah of Gujarat in 1535, and Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1568. These battles became an important part of its legacy and established Chittorgarh as a powerful symbol of Rajput courage, resistance, and sacrifice. The fort covers around 700 acres on a 180-metre-high hill and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan.
In short: Chittorgarh is more than a sightseeing stop. It’s a place to experience Mewar’s history, Rajput heritage, impressive architecture, and centuries-old stories in one enormous fort complex.

๐ฐ Udaipur to Chittorgarh Fort: Comfortable Day Trip
A trip from Udaipur to Chittorgarh is best planned as a full but relaxed day, since the fort is spread across a huge area and has many important monuments to explore.
๐ Start from Udaipur
Leave Udaipur around 8:00โ9:00 AM by private car or taxi. The journey takes roughly 2โ2.5 hours, with scenic countryside and Aravalli landscapes along the way.
๐ฐ Explore Chittorgarh Fort
Plan to spend around 3โ4 hours exploring the fort. Since Chittorgarh is larger than Kumbhalgarh, don’t try to see every monument. Focus on the major highlights:
- Vijay Stambh (Tower of Victory)
- Rana Kumbha Palace and its ruins
- Meera Temple and Kumbha Shyam Temple
- Kirti Stambh (Tower of Fame)
- Gaumukh Reservoir
- The historic seven gates leading towards the main fort
Take your time at each location and enjoy the views from the hilltop rather than rushing between attractions.
๐ Lunch & Relaxation
After exploring the fort, have lunch in Chittorgarh town. This gives you a chance to rest after several hours of walking before starting the return journey.
If you have extra time, you can make a short additional sightseeing stop, but there is no need to pack the day with too many attractions.
๐ Return to Udaipur
Start your journey back in the late afternoon and aim to reach Udaipur around 7:00โ8:00 PM.
โญ Recommended Flow
Udaipur โ Chittorgarh Fort โ Explore the major monuments โ Lunch โ Relaxed return to Udaipur
This schedule gives you enough time to experience the history, architecture, and stories of Mewar without making the trip feel rushed.

๐ฐ What to See Inside Chittorgarh Fort
Chittorgarh Fort is huge, so it’s better to focus on its most important monuments rather than trying to see everything.
๐ผ Vijay Stambh โ Tower of Victory
Built by Maharana Kumbha between 1440 and 1448, this nine-storey tower commemorates his victory over the rulers of Malwa and Gujarat. Its walls are covered with detailed sculptures and inscriptions, and the views from the top are impressive.
๐ผ Kirti Stambh โ Tower of Fame
This smaller tower is associated with Jain heritage and is dedicated to Adinath, the first Tirthankara. Its detailed carvings make it an important architectural highlight.
๐ฐ Rana Kumbha Palace
These extensive ruins once formed an important royal residence. Walking through the remains gives you an idea of the scale and grandeur of the former Mewar royal complex.
๐ Meera Temple
The temple is associated with Meera Bai, the famous Rajput princess and devoted follower of Lord Krishna. It is an important part of the fort’s religious and cultural history.
๐ Kumbha Shyam Temple
Located close to the Meera Temple, this historic shrine is another beautiful example of the fort’s religious architecture.
๐ง Gaumukh Reservoir
A peaceful spot inside the fort where water emerges from a rock shaped like a cow’s mouth. It’s a nice place to pause and enjoy a quieter side of the fort.
๐ช The Seven Gates
The approach to the hilltop passes through seven historic gateways, eventually reaching Rampol. Travelling through these gates gives you a real sense of how people would have entered and defended this massive medieval fortress.
Tip: Give yourself at least 3โ4 hours to explore these highlights comfortably. The fort is best experienced slowly, with time to appreciate both the monuments and the views.
โฐ Chittorgarh Fort Timings
Your timings are mostly correct, but there are a few details worth adjusting. The main fort is generally open daily from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, making daytime the best time to explore its large collection of monuments and viewpoints.
- Chittorgarh Fort: 9:00 AMโ6:00 PM daily
- Fateh Prakash Palace Museum: Around 9:45 AMโ4:45 PM, generally closed on Mondays
- Light & Sound Show: Usually around 7:00โ8:00 PM, although the timing can shift seasonally
- Recommended visit duration: 3โ4 hours
One important point is that although the main fort remains open until around 6:00 PM, individual monuments, museums, and ticket counters may close earlier. So, if you want to see the museum or specific attractions, don’t leave them until the end of your visit.
๐๏ธ Chittorgarh Fort Entry Fee
The prices can vary, so consider these as approximate figures:
- ๐ฎ๐ณ Indian visitors: โน40โ50
- ๐ Indian students: Around โน25
- ๐ Foreign visitors: Around โน600
- ๐ก Light & Sound Show: Around โน100โ150 for Indians and โน200โ300 for foreign visitors
- ๐จโ๐ซ Guided tour: Around โน400
The fort entry and light-and-sound show are separate tickets. Since prices can change, confirm the current rate at the ticket counter before entering.
๐ก Light & Sound Show โ Is It Worth It?
The evening show presents the history, rulers, battles, and legends of Chittorgarh through narration and lighting effects against the historic fort. It can be an interesting experience, but it’s optional for a Udaipur day trip. Since the show takes place in the evening, staying for it means you’ll return to Udaipur much later.
For a comfortable day trip, it’s better to explore the fort during the day and return to Udaipur around 7:00โ8:00 PM. If you’re staying overnight in Chittorgarh, the show becomes a much better option.
๐ค๏ธ Best Time to Visit
October to March is the most comfortable period because you’ll be walking around a large open-air fort for several hours.
โ๏ธ OctoberโMarch: Best overall season for exploring the fort comfortably.
โ๏ธ AprilโJune: Hot, so start early and carry plenty of water.
๐ง๏ธ JulyโSeptember: Greener surroundings and pleasant scenery, but rain can make walking and sightseeing less predictable.
Quick tips before you go
- Don’t try to see every structure. The fort is large, and rushing defeats the point of visiting.
- Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes. There’s a lot of walking on uneven stone.
- Start early in the day to beat both the heat and the crowds.
- Book fort entry online in advance during peak season to skip queues.
- If you’re combining forts, our Kumbhalgarh Fort day trip guide covers a similar full-day plan, though the two are best treated as separate trips given the distances involved.
If you’d rather skip the logistics of driving, timing, and tickets, you can browse our Rajasthan trip itineraries and have the Chittorgarh day trip arranged as part of your Udaipur stay.
