Food Challenges for Vegetarians in Northeast India

Food Challenges for Vegetarians in Northeast India (Honest Guide for Families)

We travelled through Assam and Meghalaya from 23rd to 28th January, as a pure vegetarian family travelling with kids.
Food did not ruin our trip, but it required planning, especially on certain routes where vegetarian options are genuinely limited.

This blog shares our real experience, trusted vegetarian food options in Shillong and Cherrapunji, difficult stretches like Guwahati to Kaziranga, and how we managed meals while travelling with children.

(For overall trip structure and pacing, refer to the complete guide here:

The Reality of Vegetarian Food in the Northeast

The Northeast is predominantly non-vegetarian by food culture. This doesn’t mean vegetarian food is unavailable, but it does mean:

  • Most restaurants serve both veg and non-veg
  • Shared kitchens are very common
  • Pure vegetarian restaurants are rare

If you’re okay eating veg food from mixed kitchens, choices increase. If you’re a pure vegetarian or travelling with kids, planning becomes essential.

(Some of the common planning mistakes we noticed during this trip are covered here:

The Toughest Stretch: Guwahati → Kaziranga

This was the most challenging route for vegetarian food.

  • Distance: ~250 km
  • Travel time: ~6 hours
  • Very few reliable pure veg options

What We Actually Did

  • Sardar Ji Dhaba
We only had tea here, not a full meal.
  • NHI4
This is where we had our proper dinner. Pure vegetarian setup, decent food quality, but slightly expensive compared to North & West India.

👉 Takeaway:
Do not assume veg food will be easy to find on this route. Eat early, carry snacks, and plan your halt intentionally.

(This stretch is part of our Kaziranga day experience, detailed here:

🥬 Kaziranga – Pure Veg / Veg-Friendly Options (Information Only)

Near Kaziranga, we came across a few pure vegetarian restaurants, but we did not eat at these places. They are mentioned as traveller-trusted options only.

  • Airavat Hotel
In-house restaurant serving pure vegetarian food only, including Assamese and Indian veg dishes.
  • Jyothis Kitchen
Listed as a pure veg restaurant in the Kaziranga/Kohora area, popular with families.

These are useful if you’re staying longer in Kaziranga and want to avoid mixed kitchens.

Pure Vegetarian Food in Shillong – Trusted Restaurants

Shillong has very few pure vegetarian restaurants, and almost all vegetarian travellers depend on the same handful of places.

✅ Where We Actually Ate

  • Jiva Veg Restaurant
    Pure vegetarian
    Located in Police Bazar
North Indian & Chinese vegetarian menu
Extremely popular, long waiting time (30–40 minutes during peak hours)

This was our primary food stop in Shillong.

(Shillong stay and location context is covered here:

ℹ️ Other Trusted Pure Veg Options in Shillong (Did Not Eat)

  • The Subz
Clean, well-reviewed pure veg restaurant with Indian and multi-cuisine options.
  • Extra Butter Pure Veg Restaurant
Casual pure veg restaurant, highly rated, located towards Upper Shillong / Mylliem.

👉 Tip:
Plan early dinners in Shillong. After 7 PM, queues grow quickly, especially with kids.

Vegetarian Food in Cherrapunji – Limited but Reliable

Cherrapunji has even fewer options than Shillong, but two pure veg restaurants are commonly relied upon by vegetarian travellers.

Our Experience

  • Limited menus
  • Mostly fixed or thali-style meals – Orange Root
  • Fast service due to simple menus – Green Leaf

This worked well after long walking days, even though flexibility was limited.

(Our Cherrapunji hotel experiences—good and bad—are documented here:

Veg Food While Travelling via Jowai

While travelling from Cherrapunji towards Shillong via Jowai, we found one of the most comforting food stops of the trip.

  • Rajasthani Dhaba
    Proper pure vegetarian dhaba
Familiar North Indian / Rajasthani taste
A big relief after days of limited veg options even tea sounded North Indian si.

(This route was part of our Dawki–Mawlynnong travel day:👉 https://lazyatra.com/blog/meghalaya/assam-meghalaya-trip-dawki-mawlynnong-experience/)

Another Safe Veg Stop Before Shillong

  • Sardar Ji Dhaba
    Located 10–12 km before Shillong
Good for tea, snacks, and simple veg food
Useful when reaching Shillong late evening

How We Managed Food While Travelling with Kids

  • Always carried biscuits, dry snacks, and ready-to-eat food
  • Stopped assuming hotel breakfasts would be sufficient
  • Accepted limited menus to reduce daily stress

Once expectations were aligned, food became manageable, not frustrating.

Final Takeaway for Vegetarian Travellers

  • Vegetarian food exists, but pure veg options are rare
  • Certain stretches (especially Guwahati → Kaziranga) are genuinely difficult
  • Planning meals matters as much as planning sightseeing
  • Carry snacks, eat early, and rely only on known veg stops

Food won’t ruin your Assam–Meghalaya trip — poor planning might.
