Jaisalmer feels different from the rest of Rajasthan. There is no lake-front palace here, and no pink-walled old city. Instead, you get a fort that still breathes, sandstone that turns gold at sunset, and a desert that starts right where the streets end. Whether you have one day or three, these are the places to visit in Jaisalmer that make the trip worth the long drive across the Thar.

Jaisalmer Fort: The Living Heart of the City

Jaisalmer Fort, also known as Sonar Quila or the Golden Fort, rises dramatically from Trikuta Hill in the middle of the Thar Desert. Built by Rawal Jaisal in 1156, it is one of the world’s few living forts, with residents, shops, homes, temples and restaurants still operating within its walls.

The fort forms part of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that recognises six historic Rajput forts for their impressive defensive architecture and cultural heritage.

Inside the fort, take your time walking through the narrow lanes and explore:

🛕 Laxminath Temple: An important Hindu temple dedicated to Lakshmi and Vishnu.

Jain Temples & Grand Old Havelis

Just inside Jaisalmer Fort, you’ll find a beautiful cluster of Jain temples dating from the 12th to 15th centuries. Their interiors are filled with incredibly detailed sandstone carvings, including sculpted pillars, ceilings and figures of the Jain Tirthankaras. The intricate craftsmanship makes them one of the fort’s highlights.

Outside the fort, three grand havelis are especially worth visiting:

🏛️ Patwon Ki Haveli: A collection of interconnected mansions built by the wealthy Patwa merchant family, famous for its elaborate sandstone façade and balconies.
🏠 Nathmal Ki Haveli: Built by two architect brothers whose slightly different styles meet beautifully at the centre of the building. Look closely at the detailed carvings of animals, flowers and human figures.
🏛️ Salim Singh Ki Haveli (Moti Mahal): Easily recognised by its distinctive curved upper balconies and unusual architectural design.

Tip: Visit the Jain temples and all three havelis together and allow a full morning so you can explore the architecture without rushing.

Gadisar Lake & The Best Sunset Points

Gadisar Lake is a peaceful spot near the old city, surrounded by small temples, shrines, chhatris and beautifully carved stone gateways. Once an important water source for Jaisalmer, the lake is now a pleasant place to slow down after exploring the fort and havelis. Early morning and sunset are the best times to visit. The softer light reflects off the water and sandstone structures, creating a beautiful golden atmosphere.

Bada Bagh, around 6 km from Jaisalmer, is a collection of royal sandstone cenotaphs built in memory of the rulers of Jaisalmer. The combination of ornate chhatris and the open desert landscape makes it particularly striking at sunrise or sunset.

Vyas Chhatri is a group of elegant sandstone cenotaphs traditionally associated with Ved Vyasa. It is one of the best places to watch the sunset over Jaisalmer Fort, with the golden city spreading out below.

Tip: If you have to choose just one sunset spot, pick Vyas Chhatri for the fort view or Bada Bagh for dramatic desert scenery and architecture.

The Thar Desert: Sam & Khuri Sand Dunes

No trip to Jaisalmer is complete without experiencing the Thar Desert. As the sun moves lower, the golden dunes change colour and the desert becomes one of the most memorable parts of the journey.

Sam Sand Dunes, around 40 km from Jaisalmer, is the most popular area for a classic desert experience. Most visitors arrive in the afternoon and stay through sunset. You can take a camel safari across the dunes, usually a short ride that is especially enjoyable around sunset. For something faster and more adventurous, a jeep safari takes you across the dunes with plenty of dune-bashing. As evening arrives, desert camps come alive with Rajasthani folk music, Kalbelia dance and traditional performances, followed by dinner under the open sky. You can also stay overnight in a desert camp and experience the quiet of the Thar after dark.

Allow: Half a day for the sunset experience, or an overnight stay for the complete desert experience.

Khuri Sand Dunes offers a quieter and more traditional alternative to Sam. The area has a stronger connection with local village life and generally feels less commercial and crowded. It is a good choice if you want to enjoy the dunes at a slower pace, experience a more peaceful sunset and stay in a smaller desert camp.

Which should you choose?
Choose Sam for the classic Jaisalmer desert experience with more activities and cultural performances. Choose Khuri if you prefer peace, fewer crowds and a more authentic village atmosphere.

If you are travelling in winter, check whether your dates line up with the Jaisalmer Desert Festival, usually held in late January or early February at the Sam dunes, with camel races, folk performances, and a lively bazaar. Dates shift slightly each year with the lunar calendar, so confirm on the Rajasthan Tourism website before you book.

Beyond the obvious: desert wildlife and history

A few sites reward travellers with an extra day or two:

Desert National Park protects blackbuck, chinkara, desert foxes, and the endangered Great Indian Bustard, alongside sand dunes and salt-lake habitats
Kuldhara, an abandoned village about 30 km out, wrapped in local legend about why it was deserted
Akal Wood Fossil Park, home to fossilised tree trunks from a forest that existed roughly 180 million years ago, based on Rajasthan Tourism’s geological notes on the site

Jaisalmer sits in one of India’s hottest regions, so timing matters more here than almost anywhere else in Rajasthan.

November to February: the best window, with daytime temperatures between 15°C and 25°C, ideal for fort walks and desert camping
March and October: shoulder months, warm but manageable
April to June: extreme heat, often above 40°C, best avoided
July to September: monsoon brings occasional rain and slightly cooler evenings, though the desert stays mostly dry
