If you’re staying near Ranthambore for a tiger safari, you can add a completely different wildlife experience nearby: a boat safari on the Chambal River to spot gharials.
This gharial safari from Ranthambore doesn’t take place inside the national park at all. It happens in the National Chambal Sanctuary, around Palighat, roughly 45 km from Sawai Madhopur. Where a Ranthambore safari puts you in a jeep chasing tiger sightings through dry forest, the Chambal safari puts you on a quiet boat, watching a river ecosystem instead.
What is a gharial safari?
Instead of driving through forest, you travel by boat along the Chambal River. The main draw is the gharial, a crocodilian with a strikingly long, narrow snout built for catching fish. Adult males also grow a distinctive bulbous knob at the tip of the snout.
According to Wikipedia, the sanctuary was set up to protect the critically endangered gharial, along with the red-crowned roof turtle and the endangered Ganges river dolphin, making it one of India’s most important freshwater reserves.

What you might see
Gharials are the headline attraction, but the boat ride turns up more than crocodilians. Depending on conditions, you may spot mugger crocodiles, the rare Gangetic river dolphin, freshwater turtles, and a wide range of resident and migratory river birds.
The Chambal is one of the cleanest rivers in the country, largely because its ravine landscape has kept it away from heavy human disturbance. That’s part of why the sanctuary supports so much aquatic wildlife in one stretch of water.
How it’s different from a Ranthambore tiger safari
These two safaris feel nothing alike, and it helps to know that before you book either one.
| Ranthambore safari | Gharial/Chambal safari |
|---|---|
| Jeep or canter, dry forest | Boat, river and sandbanks |
| Main draw: tiger | Main draw: gharial |
| Fast-paced, exciting | Slow, peaceful |
| Tiger, leopard, deer, birds | Gharial, crocodile, dolphin, turtles, birds |
Booking a Ranthambore safari does not automatically include the Chambal boat safari, and vice versa. If you want both, book them separately.

Where it starts and how the boat ride works
For a Ranthambore-based trip, boats typically leave from Palighat on the Chambal River, about an hour’s drive from Sawai Madhopur. You board with a guide, and the boat moves slowly along the river while the guide scans sandbanks, riverbanks, and shallow areas for wildlife.
The pace is calm and quiet by design. You’re observing a river ecosystem, not chasing an animal through dense forest, so the whole experience feels more relaxed than a tiger safari.
How many trips and when to go
- One boat safari is enough for most travellers. Take a second one if you especially enjoy gharial spotting or birdwatching.
- Best time: October to March, when the weather is cooler.
- Best for birds: November to February, when migratory birds arrive.
- Morning: Best for comfortable weather and wildlife spotting.
- Afternoon: Great for photography and golden light.
Best simple choice: One morning safari between November and February.
What to pack and safety rules
Keep it simple: sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, water, binoculars, a camera with a zoom or telephoto lens, a light jacket in winter, and comfortable shoes. Binoculars matter more here than on a tiger safari, since birds and animals often sit some distance away on the opposite bank.
A few safety rules matter more than anything else on the boat: wear the life jacket your operator provides, don’t try to swim or put your hands or feet in the water, don’t feed wildlife, and don’t throw anything into the river. The goal is to watch the ecosystem without disturbing it.
Should you add it to your Ranthambore trip?
Yes, especially if you have at least two nights in Sawai Madhopur. The two safaris complement each other well: one gives you the excitement of tracking a large predator through the forest, the other gives you a slower, quieter look at one of India’s more unusual protected ecosystems.
A workable plan looks like this:
- Day 1: Arrive in Sawai Madhopur, afternoon Ranthambore safari
- Day 2: Morning Ranthambore safari, relax, then a Chambal gharial safari
- Day 3: Ranthambore Fort, then continue your trip
