A Pushkar day trip from Ajmer is one of the easiest side trips in Rajasthan. The two towns sit just 15 km apart, so you can leave after breakfast, spend the day by the lake and in the bazaars, and be back in Ajmer for dinner. They also feel nothing alike. Ajmer runs on Sufi history and the Ajmer Sharif Dargah. Pushkar runs on temple bells, ghats, and a much slower pace. Which option is best?

If you are visiting Pushkar as a tourist, I would recommend a taxi or your own car. The journey is short, and you can travel comfortably and stop for photos along the way.

A common route is: Ajmer → Nag Pahar → Pushkar

So, if you’re staying in Ajmer, Pushkar is easy to visit as a half-day or full-day trip. You don’t need to plan a separate long journey for it.

If you’re coming from Jaipur, you can also do Jaipur → Ajmer → Pushkar in one trip, since all three places are relatively close by road.

1. Start at Pushkar Lake

When you arrive in Pushkar , make Pushkar Lake your first stop. It is located right in the heart of the town and is one of the most important spiritual places in Pushkar. According to Hindu tradition, Lord Brahma dropped a lotus flower on the ground, and the lake appeared at that spot. Because of this, Pushkar is considered a very sacred pilgrimage destination. Around the lake, there are 52 ghats—stone steps leading down to the water. Pilgrims come here to take a holy bath, pray, and perform religious rituals.

What should you do there?

The best way to experience the lake is simply to walk slowly around it. You will see:

2. Visit the Brahma Temple

After exploring Pushkar Lake, walk a few minutes to the Jagatpita Brahma Mandir , one of the very few temples in the world dedicated to Lord Brahma. The temple you see today is believed to date back to the 14th century, although the site itself is traditionally considered much older, with a history going back around 2,000 years. One of the first things you’ll notice is the temple’s bright red shikhara (spire). Near the entrance, look for the hamsa, or swan, which is associated with Lord Brahma and is traditionally regarded as his vehicle.

Inside the main shrine, you’ll find a four-faced idol of Lord Brahma, representing his four faces looking in the four directions. The shrine also features Goddess Gayatri, Brahma’s consort. The temple’s walls are decorated with numerous silver coins offered by devotees, adding to its distinctive appearance. Since this is an active Hindu place of worship, dress respectfully and modestly. The temple can become particularly crowded during religious festivals.

The temple generally opens early in the morning and remains open until the evening. Timings can vary by season and special occasions, so it’s worth checking on the day you visit.

A good plan is to visit the Brahma Temple after Pushkar Lake in the morning, while you’re already exploring the old town on foot.

3. Walk Through the Old Town and Bazaars

After visiting the Brahma Temple, take some time to walk through Pushkar’s old town. You don’t need a fixed route—just wander through the narrow streets and explore the colorful bazaars. This is where you’ll see the everyday side of Pushkar. The streets are filled with handicraft shops, colorful textiles, silver jewelery, clothing, souvenirs, and small cafés. Along the way, you’ll also see a fascinating mix of pilgrims, local shopkeepers, travelers, and backpackers.

Give yourself one to two hours to explore at a relaxed pace. Even if you aren’t interested in shopping, walking through these lanes is one of the best ways to experience Pushkar’s atmosphere.

Shopping tip

Bargaining is common in many of the smaller shops and market stalls. If you see something you like, don’t hesitate to politely negotiate the price.

Stop for lunch

This is also a good place to stop for lunch. Pushkar is a strictly vegetarian pilgrimage town, so you’ll find plenty of vegetarian and vegan food, from traditional Indian dishes to cafés serving international-style meals. Meat and alcohol are not permitted within Pushkar’s town area, so don’t expect to find non-vegetarian restaurants or bars here. After lunch, you can continue exploring the old town before moving on to your next Pushkar attraction.

A Suggested Day Trip from Ajmer to Pushkar

If you’re leaving Ajmer around 8–9 AM, you can comfortably spend the day exploring Pushkar at a relaxed pace.

Start your visit at Pushkar Lake, where you can walk around the ghats and take in the peaceful spiritual atmosphere. From there, continue to the Brahma Temple, one of Pushkar’s most important religious landmarks.

After visiting the temple, spend some time wandering through the old town and colourful bazaars. Browse the handicraft and textile shops, look for silver jewellery and souvenirs, and enjoy the lively mix of pilgrims, locals, and travellers. Stop at a local café or restaurant for a vegetarian lunch before continuing your sightseeing.

In the afternoon, you can explore some of Pushkar’s smaller temples and ghats, return to the markets for shopping, or simply enjoy a café and soak up the relaxed atmosphere.

Make sure to save some time for sunset at Pushkar Lake. This is one of the most beautiful moments of the day. The warm evening light reflects across the water, the Aravalli hills become silhouettes in the distance, and the busy town gradually becomes quieter.

After sunset, you can begin your drive back to Ajmer. This makes for an easy and enjoyable full-day trip from Ajmer to Pushkar without having to rush between attractions.

Best Time for a Pushkar Day Trip

The best time to visit Pushkar is generally October to March, when the weather is cooler and more comfortable for walking around the lake, temples, and old bazaars. This is also the busiest season, thanks to the pleasant weather and Pushkar’s festival calendar.

If you want to experience Pushkar at its most lively, consider planning your visit around the Pushkar Camel Fair. In 2026, the fair is scheduled for November 17–24. During the festival, the town comes alive with camel trading, folk performances, cultural events, and religious ceremonies around Pushkar Lake. Accommodation in Pushkar can become extremely difficult to find during these dates, so staying in Ajmer and visiting Pushkar as a day trip can be a much easier option.

Holi is another exciting time to experience Pushkar. The festival brings colour, music, dancing, and a particularly energetic atmosphere to the town. It can be a fun choice if you want to see a more festive and youthful side of Pushkar, although the celebrations can also make the streets crowded and busy.

From April to June, temperatures can become very high, so an early start is recommended and it’s best to avoid spending too much time outdoors during the hottest part of the day. The monsoon season is generally quieter, with greener surroundings and occasional rain, but showers can be unpredictable.

For a comfortable sightseeing trip, October to March is the safest choice, while the Camel Fair and Holi are worth considering if you specifically want a festival experience.

Why Ajmer and Pushkar work so well together

The two towns complement each other because they represent different sides of Rajasthan. Ajmer gives you Sufi shrines, Mughal-era history, and the Ajmer Sharif Dargah. Pushkar gives you Hindu temple architecture, sacred ghats, and a laid-back bazaar culture.
