Ranakpur Jain Temple sits in a quiet valley of the Aravalli Hills, about 90 km from Udaipur. It isn’t a quick 20-minute stop. It’s a sprawling 15th-century marble complex, famous for 1,444 individually carved pillars, and one of Jainism’s five holiest pilgrimage sites.
This guide covers timings, entry rules, what to see, and how to plan your visit from Udaipur.
๐ What is Ranakpur Jain Temple, and Why Is It Famous?
Ranakpur Jain Temple is one of Rajasthan’s most famous Jain temples, built in the 15th century under the patronage of Rana Kumbha. A Jain merchant named Dhanna Shah is traditionally credited with commissioning it. The temple is dedicated to Adinath, the first Tirthankara of Jainism, and is an important pilgrimage site.
What Makes It Special?
The temple is famous for its stunning marble architecture, especially its 1,444 intricately carved pillars, traditionally said to be different from one another. The complex also features numerous halls, domes, and beautifully detailed ceilings. As sunlight moves through the temple during the day, it creates changing patterns of light and shadow across the marble carvings, making the architecture even more impressive.
In short: Ranakpur is worth visiting for its combination of history, spirituality, extraordinary craftsmanship, and peaceful Aravalli surroundings.

๐ Ranakpur Jain Temple Timings & Entry Fee
Timings
Ranakpur Jain Temple is an active place of worship, so tourist entry is different from general temple access.
- General temple hours: Around 6:00 AMโ8:00 PM
- Tourist entry to the main temple: Usually around 12:00 PMโ5:00 PM
- Jain worshippers: May enter earlier, generally from around 6:30 AM
- Recommended time: 1.5โ2.5 hours
๐ If you’re visiting mainly for sightseeing, it’s best to arrive after 12:00 PM so you can access the main temple.
Entry Fee & Other Charges
Entry for Indian visitors is generally free. Charges can vary for foreign visitors and certain facilities.
You may need to pay for:
- ๐ธ Photography: Around โน50โ150
- ๐ Locker: Around โน10 for shoes, bags, or other belongings
- ๐ง Audio guide: Around โน200, if available
Important: Leather items, food, and drinking water are generally not allowed inside the temple. You can leave them in your vehicle or use the available storage/locker facilities.
๐๏ธ What to See Inside the Temple Complex
Ranakpur is more than a single temple; it is a complex containing several important shrines.
i. Chaumukha Temple
The main and most impressive temple, dedicated to Adinath. Its famous four-faced marble idol represents the four directions and gives the temple its name.
ii. Parshvanath Temple
Dedicated to Parshvanath, the 23rd Tirthankara, this temple is also known for its beautiful and intricate carvings.
iii. Surya Temple
A smaller Sun Temple within the complex, featuring distinctive carvings and architectural details.
iv. Amba Mata Temple
Another important shrine within the complex, adding to the religious and architectural character of Ranakpur.
Take Your Time Inside
The Chaumukha Temple deserves the most attention. Don’t simply walk through it and leaveโthe beautifully carved pillars, ceilings, domes, and changing patterns of light are what make Ranakpur special.
If you’re visiting for sightseeing, 1.5โ2.5 hours is a comfortable amount of time to explore the complex without rushing

Dress code and temple etiquette
Because this is an active religious site, dress and behavior matter more here than at a fort or palace:
- Cover your shoulders and knees.
- Avoid leather items entirely; they aren’t permitted inside.
- Remove your footwear before entering.
- Keep your voice down near prayer areas, and don’t disturb anyone worshipping.
- Follow the temple staff’s instructions on where photography is and isn’t allowed.
๐ How to Reach Ranakpur from Udaipur
Ranakpur is approximately 90 km from Udaipur, and the journey usually takes around 2โ2.5 hours by car. The most convenient option is a private taxi or car, especially if you plan to visit other attractions on the same day. The route becomes particularly scenic as you approach Ranakpur, with winding roads, Aravalli hills, and countryside views.
Buses are available, but they are less convenient if you want the flexibility to explore Ranakpur and nearby attractions.
๐ฐ Combining Ranakpur with Kumbhalgarh
Kumbhalgarh Fort is around 50โ55 km from Ranakpur, making it possible to visit both places in one day.
A comfortable route would be: Udaipur โ Ranakpur Jain Temple โ Lunch โ Kumbhalgarh Fort โ Udaipur
If you are more interested in architecture and spirituality, spend more time at Ranakpur. If you prefer forts, history, and Rajput heritage, give Kumbhalgarh more time.
The important thing is not to overpack the day. Both places are worth exploring slowly rather than rushing from one attraction to another.
๐ค๏ธ Best Time to Visit
October to March is the best period, with pleasant weather for travelling and exploring the temple.
- ๐ง๏ธ Monsoon: The Aravalli hills become beautifully green, but heavy rain can affect road conditions.
- โ๏ธ Summer: It can get quite hot, so try to visit during the earlier part of the tourist entry window.
Overall: For a comfortable UdaipurโRanakpurโKumbhalgarh trip, start early, travel by private car, and keep enough time at each destination instead of trying to fit in too many stops.
Quick tips before you go
- Arrive after 12 PM if you’re visiting purely as a tourist, since the main temple restricts non-worshipper entry before that.
- Carry cash for camera fees, lockers, and the temple canteen.
- Mobile network is weak in the area, so download offline maps before you set out.
- Pair your trip with our Kumbhalgarh Fort day trip guide if you want to make it a full day.
