Here’s something most Golden Triangle Rajasthan itineraries don’t tell you: if you’ve booked Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur, you’re already standing inside Rajasthan. Jaipur isn’t a side trip from Rajasthan — it’s the capital of it. Which means the “Golden Triangle” most first-time India travelers book is really just the opening chapter of a much bigger Rajasthan story, and extending it by a few days unlocks the blue city of Jodhpur, the lake palaces of Udaipur, or the golden dunes of Jaisalmer.
This guide covers the classic Delhi-Agra-Jaipur route, current and accurate travel times between each city, and — the part most guides skip — a menu of extension options depending on how many extra days you have. If you land in Jaipur and want to know the fastest way in from your specific city, our departure city guide has that covered separately.
Golden Triangle Rajasthan Quick Facts
| Leg | Distance | By Train | By Road |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delhi → Agra | ~230 km | Gatimaan Express, ~1 hr 40 min (fastest); Shatabdi, ~2 hrs | Yamuna Expressway, ~3–4 hrs |
| Agra → Jaipur | ~240 km | No direct fast train currently — the old Agra-Jaipur Shatabdi was discontinued in 2018 | ~4–5 hrs via NH21, often with a Fatehpur Sikri stop |
| Jaipur → Delhi | ~280 km | Shatabdi / Double Decker, ~4.5–5.5 hrs | ~5–5.5 hrs via NH48 |
A quick correction worth knowing: a lot of older Golden Triangle blogs still recommend a direct Agra-Jaipur Shatabdi train. That service was discontinued in 2018 and hasn’t returned — road transport (private cab or bus) is currently the practical way to cover this leg, and it lets you stop at Fatehpur Sikri along the way, which the train route skipped anyway.
The Classic 4–6 Day Golden Triangle
If you’re short on time, this is the core loop:
- Day 1–2: Delhi. Old Delhi (Jama Masjid, Chandni Chowk) and New Delhi (Humayun’s Tomb, Qutub Minar, India Gate).
- Day 3: Agra. Early Taj Mahal visit (sunrise light is worth the early alarm), then Agra Fort in the afternoon.
- Day 4: Agra → Jaipur. Stop at Fatehpur Sikri en route, arrive Jaipur by evening.
- Day 5: Jaipur. Amber Fort, City Palace, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar.
- Day 6: Jaipur → Delhi. Return by train or road, or fly out of Jaipur directly if your onward journey allows it.
This is the version most travelers already know. The more interesting question is what to do if you have more than six days — which is where Rajasthan actually opens up.
Rajasthan Extension Options (Pick by How Many Extra Days You Have)

| Extension | Extra Days | Route | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pushkar Add-on | +2 days | Jaipur → Pushkar → Delhi | A quick taste of small-town, spiritual Rajasthan without a major detour |
| Ranthambore Safari | +2–3 days | Jaipur → Ranthambore → Delhi | Travelers who want a tiger safari alongside the heritage circuit |
| Western Rajasthan | +5 days | Jaipur → Jodhpur → Udaipur | The most popular full extension — forts, the Blue City, and lake palaces |
| Full Desert Circuit | +8 days | Jaipur → Jodhpur → Jaisalmer → Udaipur | For travelers who want the complete Rajasthan experience in one trip |
Jodhpur to Jaisalmer and Udaipur don’t have fast direct trains either, so road transport (a private cab across your circuit) is generally the more time-efficient and comfortable option once you’re moving deeper into Rajasthan. Flights connect Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Udaipur if you’d rather skip the road time on any one leg.
Sample 10-Day Golden Triangle + Rajasthan Itinerary
This is the Western Rajasthan extension in full, day by day:
- Delhi — arrival, rest
- Delhi — Old and New Delhi sightseeing
- Agra — Taj Mahal at sunrise, Agra Fort
- Jaipur — travel via Fatehpur Sikri, arrive evening
- Jaipur — Amber Fort, City Palace, Hawa Mahal
- Jodhpur — travel from Jaipur (~6 hrs road or ~1 hr flight), evening in the Blue City
- Jodhpur — Mehrangarh Fort, Jaswant Thada, old city bazaars
- Udaipur — travel from Jodhpur (~5–6 hrs road), evening on Lake Pichola
- Udaipur — City Palace, boat ride, Saheliyon Ki Bari
- Departure — fly out of Udaipur, or return to Delhi for an international connection
For the full desert circuit (add Jaisalmer between Jodhpur and Udaipur), our complete Rajasthan tour packages guide breaks down the extended itinerary, costs, and best places to visit in more depth. And if you’re planning around festivals or trying to avoid peak summer heat, check our best time to visit Rajasthan guide before you lock in dates.
Planning Tips
- Entry and exit points: Fly into Delhi, and either fly out of Udaipur/Jodhpur (if your extension ends there) or loop back to Delhi. Both are common and roughly similar in cost.
- Book trains early: The Gatimaan Express and Delhi-Jaipur Shatabdi sell out during peak season (November–February) — book through IRCTC as early as your dates allow.
- Best time to travel this route: October to March, for the same reasons it’s the best time for Rajasthan generally — comfortable daytime temperatures for fort-climbing and long drives.
- Monument tickets: Book Taj Mahal and Agra Fort tickets in advance through the Archaeological Survey of India portal, especially during peak season weekends.
- Traveling as a couple or family: If romance or family time is more the focus than a packed sightseeing schedule, our Rajasthan honeymoon packages and Rajasthan family packages build in more leisure time around the same cities.
FAQs: Golden Triangle + Rajasthan
Is the Golden Triangle already part of Rajasthan? Partly — Jaipur, one of the three Golden Triangle cities, is Rajasthan’s capital. Delhi and Agra are outside the state, so a “Rajasthan extension” specifically means adding cities beyond Jaipur, like Jodhpur, Udaipur, or Jaisalmer.
How many days do I need for Golden Triangle plus Rajasthan? The classic Golden Triangle alone takes 4–6 days. Adding Jodhpur and Udaipur pushes that to around 10 days; including Jaisalmer for the full desert circuit needs closer to 12–13 days.
Is there a direct train from Agra to Jaipur? Not currently. The Agra-Jaipur Shatabdi was discontinued in 2018. Road travel (roughly 4–5 hours) is the practical option for this leg, and it allows a stop at Fatehpur Sikri.
Should I book Golden Triangle and Rajasthan as one trip or two? One trip is more efficient if you can spare the days — you avoid a second long-haul flight into India, and the road/rail connections between all these cities are well established. Splitting it only makes sense if your total available time is under a week.
What’s the best way to travel between Rajasthan’s cities during the extension? Private road transport is generally the most efficient once you’re past Jaipur, since fast direct trains are limited on the Jodhpur-Jaisalmer-Udaipur legs. Flights are a good option if you want to save time on any single stretch.
