A short history of Amber Fort

Raja Man Singh I, a general under Emperor Akbar, began building Amber Fort in 1592. Later rulers, especially Mirza Raja Jai Singh I and Sawai Jai Singh II, expanded it over the next 150 years.

For a long time, Amber (also spelled Amer) served as the capital of the Kachwaha Rajput dynasty. Everything changed when Sawai Jai Singh II founded the new city of Jaipur in 1727. The court moved downhill, and Amber Fort settled into life as a ceremonial landmark rather than a working capital.

In 2013, UNESCO added Amber Fort to the World Heritage List as one of six Hill Forts of Rajasthan, alongside Chittorgarh, Kumbhalgarh, Ranthambore, Gagron, and Jaisalmer. The inscription recognises how Amber Palace represents a key 17th-century phase in the development of a shared Rajput-Mughal court style. Today, the fort still uses red sandstone and white marble from the original construction. Maota Lake sits right below it, and the reflection on a calm morning is one of the best photo opportunities in Jaipur.

Amber Fort spreads across four main courtyards. Here’s what to prioritise if your time is short.

Jaleb Chowk: It is the main entrance courtyard of the amber fort. In old time royal soldiers and armies present their achievement after the victory in the battle
Diwan-e-Aam: It means the Hall of Public Audience where king meet their important peoples and representative to hear their problem and discuss matter of kingdom. In this hall we wiil get a chance to see the carved pillars and open architectural design.
Sheesh Mahal: It is known as the most famous and beautiful attraction of Amber fort. There are detailed decoration with thousands of small mirrors and glass pieces in the ceilings and walls. Even a single candle light could create sparkling reflections throughout the room. The detailed floral design and beautiful artwork shows the Rajput craftmanship. It is also a beautiful spot for the photohgraphy.
Ganesh Pol: It is a beautiful decorated gateway of amber fort. It seperated the public area from the private sections of the royal family. Here we can see the beautiful decoration of colorful paintings, floral patterns aur traditional designs on the gateway.
Sila Devi Temple: A historic Hindu temple located inside the Amber fort, dedicated to the Goddess Shila Devi, a form of Goddess Durga. In the entrance and interiors of the temple we get to see the traditional rajput artworks and beautiful carvings. Even now a days, it remains an important religious site.
Sukh Niwas: It was designed as a cool and comfortable retreat for the royal family, particularly during Jaipur’s hot summers. The building incorporated an early form of natural cooling: water was circulated through channels near the doors and walls, helping to lower the temperature inside. Architecture and surrounding gardens make this area more attractive.
Maota Lake: Lake lies directly below Amber Fort and adds greatly to the beauty of the surrounding landscape. The lake historically provided water for the fort and palace complex. On a clear day, the reflection of the fort and surrounding hills can be seen in the water, making it an excellent location for photographs. Best time to visit Amber Fort

October to March is the best time to visit Amber Fort. Daytime temperatures stay comfortable, and mornings are cool enough for a long walk through the courtyards.

Within a single day, aim for one of these two windows:

7:00 AM – 10:00 AM: Fewer crowds, softer light for photos, and the best chance at an elephant ride up to Jaleb Chowk.
4:00 PM – 5:00 PM: Golden-hour light on the sandstone walls, plus cooler air before the evening light show.

Avoid the midday stretch between 11 AM and 3 PM. Tour buses arrive in bulk, and Rajasthan’s sun gets harsh, especially between April and June. Amber Fort sits about 11 km from central Jaipur, roughly a 25 to 35-minute drive depending on traffic.

By taxi or auto-rickshaw: The easiest option, with fares typically between ₹300 and ₹500 one way.
By RSRTC bus: Regular buses run from Sindhi Camp in Jaipur and are the cheapest way in.
By private car: Most convenient if you’re combining Amber Fort with Jaigarh Fort and Nahargarh Fort in one day.

Wear comfortable, closed shoes. The stone paths and stairs can get slippery, especially near the mirror palace.
