Udaipur to Kumbhalgarh Fort: full day trip itinerary

A Udaipur to Kumbhalgarh Fort day trip is one of the best ways to see Mewar history beyond the city. Kumbhalgarh sits about 84 to 85 km north of Udaipur, roughly a 2 to 2.5 hour drive through Aravalli hill roads. This guide covers the full itinerary, hour by hour, plus timings, ticket prices, and everything worth seeing once you’re there.

๐Ÿฐ Why Visit Kumbhalgarh Fort?

Kumbhalgarh Fort is one of Rajasthan’s most impressive historic forts, combining grand architecture, fascinating history, and beautiful Aravalli landscapes.

The fort was built in the 15th century by Rana Kumbha and is best known for its enormous defensive wall, which stretches for around 36 km across the surrounding hills. Because of its remarkable scale, it is often compared to the Great Wall of China. Kumbhalgarh is also closely connected with Maharana Pratap, one of Mewar’s most famous rulers, who was born here. This gives the fort an important place in Rajasthan’s history. In 2013, UNESCO included Kumbhalgarh Fort in the World Heritage Site known as the โ€œHill Forts of Rajasthan.โ€

What makes Kumbhalgarh especially worth visiting is the combination of massive fortifications, ancient temples, palaces, mountain views, and centuries of Mewar history. It isn’t just a place to see and leave quicklyโ€”you can easily spend several hours exploring its gates, walls, temples, viewpoints, and Badal Mahal.

In short: If you’re interested in Rajasthan’s history and want to experience one of its most spectacular forts, Kumbhalgarh is well worth making a full-day trip from Udaipur.

๐Ÿฐ Udaipur to Kumbhalgarh Fort: Comfortable Full-Day Itinerary

A trip from Udaipur to Kumbhalgarh Fort is best planned as a relaxed full-day outing rather than trying to cover too many places. The idea is to leave Udaipur in the morning, spend a few comfortable hours exploring the fort, enjoy lunch, and return to Udaipur by the evening.

๐Ÿš— Start from Udaipur: 8:00โ€“9:00 AM

Leave Udaipur around 8:00โ€“9:00 AM by private car or taxi. The journey takes roughly 2โ€“2.5 hours, and the drive through the Aravalli countryside is scenic and enjoyable.

You can make a short tea or photo stop along the way if you wish, without making the journey feel rushed.

๐Ÿฐ Explore Kumbhalgarh Fort

Once you reach Kumbhalgarh, spend around 3 hours exploring the fort at a relaxed pace. The fort is quite large, so there is no need to see every corner.

Make sure to experience the massive fort walls and gateways, the numerous Hindu and Jain temples, Badal Mahal, Neelkanth Mahadev Temple, and the old palace areas. There are also several viewpoints offering beautiful views of the surrounding Aravalli Hills.

Take your time with photographs and enjoy the atmosphere rather than trying to complete the fort quickly.

๐Ÿ› Lunch & Relaxed Break

After exploring the fort, have lunch at a restaurant around Kumbhalgarh. This is a good opportunity to relax and take a proper break before beginning the return journey.

If you still have plenty of time and energy, you can explore a little of the Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary or simply enjoy the surrounding scenery. There’s no need to add another major attraction if you want to keep the day comfortable.

๐Ÿš— Return to Udaipur: Around 6:00โ€“7:00 PM

Start your journey back to Udaipur in the late afternoon so that you can reach Udaipur around 6:00โ€“7:00 PM.

This gives you a full day to experience Kumbhalgarh without constantly watching the clock.

โญ Recommended Plan

Leave Udaipur: 8:00โ€“9:00 AM
โ†’ Scenic drive to Kumbhalgarh
โ†’ Explore the fort for around 3 hours
โ†’ Relaxed lunch
โ†’ Optional nearby sightseeing or leisure time
โ†’ Return to Udaipur around 6:00โ€“7:00 PM

The key is to keep Kumbhalgarh as the main attraction of the day. Rather than squeezing several places into the itinerary, give yourself enough time to enjoy the fort, the history, the architecture, and the beautiful Aravalli scenery at a comfortable pace.

๐Ÿฐ Kumbhalgarh Fort Timings & Entry Fee

โฐ Fort Timings

Kumbhalgarh Fort generally opens around 9:00 AM and remains open until approximately 5:00โ€“6:00 PM, depending on the season.

For a comfortable visit, plan to spend around 2.5โ€“3 hours exploring the fort. This gives you enough time to see the main palaces, temples, gateways, walls, and viewpoints without rushing.

If you’re planning to visit specifically for the light and sound show, it’s best to confirm the timing before your trip, as evening show schedules can vary.

๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ Entry Fee

Ticket prices can vary, so consider these figures as approximate:

  • ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ Indian visitors: Around โ‚น40
  • ๐ŸŒ Foreign visitors: Around โ‚น500-600
  • ๐Ÿ’ก Light & sound show: Around โ‚น100-300
  • ๐Ÿš— Four-wheeler parking: Around โ‚น40-50

The fort entry ticket and light-and-sound show ticket are separate, so don’t assume that one ticket includes both.

๐Ÿ’ก Light & Sound Show

The light and sound show is a good optional addition if you don’t mind returning to Udaipur late. It usually lasts around 45 minutes and uses lights, narration, and the illuminated fort walls to tell the story of Rana Kumbha, Maharana Pratap, and the Mewar dynasty. Seeing Kumbhalgarh illuminated against the dark Aravalli Hills offers a completely different experience from visiting during the day.

However, for a comfortable day trip, I would recommend skipping the show and returning to Udaipur around 6:00โ€“7:00 PM. If you stay for the evening show, you may reach Udaipur around 9:30โ€“10:00 PM.

In short: Visit the fort during the daytime, allow 2.5โ€“3 hours, and treat the light-and-sound show as an optional evening experience rather than something you need to fit into the regular itinerary.

Tips for planning your visit

  • Don’t overpack the day. Kumbhalgarh deserves 2.5 to 3 hours on its own. Adding too many other stops rushes the fort visit.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. There’s a fair amount of walking on uneven stone surfaces.
  • Carry a light jacket if you’re staying for the evening show, since it gets breezy after sunset.
  • Book online where possible, especially during peak season from October to March, to skip queues at the counter.
  • Combine your trip with a stop at Ranakpur Jain Temple if you have an extra day, since it’s roughly 55 km from Kumbhalgarh and a common pairing.
  • Resting in Udaipur before or after? Check our places to visit in Udaipur guide to fill out the rest of your trip.

If you’d rather not handle the driving, timing, and ticket logistics yourself, you can browse our Rajasthan trip itineraries and have the Kumbhalgarh day trip built into your Udaipur stay, with transport and entries arranged in advance.
