Jagdish Temple and Gangaur Ghat offer two beautiful and contrasting experiences of old Udaipur, and both can easily be explored together. Jagdish Temple showcases the city’s centuries-old religious heritage through its impressive architecture, intricate stone carvings and active Hindu worship. A short walk away, Gangaur Ghat brings you to the peaceful shores of Lake Pichola, surrounded by historic buildings and traditional ghats, where you can experience local life and enjoy beautiful sunset views. The ghat is also an important centre for Gangaur and Mewar Festival celebrations, making it a special place to experience Rajasthan’s culture and traditions.
🛕 Jagdish Temple: History & Architecture
Jagdish Temple, built in 1651 by Maharana Jagat Singh I, is one of Udaipur’s most important historic temples and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, worshipped here as Jagdish or Jagannath. Located just a short walk from the City Palace, the temple is reached by a grand flight of marble steps guarded by beautifully carved elephants. Its impressive Maru-Gurjara/Indo-Aryan architecture is filled with intricate carvings of gods, dancers, animals and decorative patterns across its pillars, walls and ceilings.
What makes Jagdish Temple especially special is that it is not simply a historic monument—it remains an active place of worship, so you can hear temple bells, see incense, observe prayers and experience centuries-old religious traditions continuing today.

🛕Jagdish Temple — Timings, What to Expect & Visiting Tips
Jagdish Temple is one of the most important and beautiful temples in Udaipur. Located in the heart of the Old City, close to City Palace, it is dedicated to Lord Vishnu (Jagdish) and is an active place of worship.
⏰ Temple Timings
The temple generally operates in two daily sessions, although timings can change slightly depending on the season, festivals, and religious ceremonies.
| Session | Approximate Timing |
|---|---|
| 🌅 Morning Darshan | 4:15 AM – 1:00 PM |
| 🌆 Evening Darshan | 5:15 PM – 8:00 PM |
| 🎟️ Entry Fee | Free |
Tip: If you want to experience the temple at its most lively and spiritual, consider visiting during morning or evening aarti. You may hear bells and devotional chanting and see lamps being offered during the prayers.
🚶 Important: Getting to the Temple
One of the most important things to know is that you generally cannot take your four-wheeler right up to Jagdish Temple because it is located in the narrow, busy lanes of Udaipur’s Old City.
If you are travelling by car, it is better to:
- 🚗 Park your four-wheeler in an appropriate parking area outside/near the restricted Old City lanes.
- 🛺 Take a local auto-rickshaw/tuk-tuk as close as permitted.
- 🚶 From there, walk through the Old City lanes to reach the temple.
- 👟 Be prepared to walk, particularly if you are visiting several nearby attractions.
The walking part is actually enjoyable because you’ll pass through the traditional streets, shops, small markets and old buildings of Udaipur.
🙏 Visiting Tips
- Remove your footwear before entering the temple.
- Dress modestly, as this is an active Hindu place of worship.
- Photography may be possible in permitted areas, but avoid flash photography and don’t photograph people during prayers without permission.
- If you’re visiting during aarti, be respectful of devotees and avoid blocking entrances or prayer areas.
- Early morning and evening are generally the nicest times to visit, particularly if you want a more atmospheric experience.
- Allow roughly 30–60 minutes for the temple and surrounding area, depending on crowds and whether you attend aarti.
- The temple has stairs, so visitors should be prepared for some climbing.
🌤️ Best Time to Visit
For comfortable sightseeing, October to March is generally a pleasant period because Udaipur’s weather is cooler. This is especially useful because Jagdish Temple is best combined with a walking tour of the Old City.
📍 Best way to combine it
A convenient Old City sequence is:
City Palace → Jagdish Temple → Old City walking streets → Gangaur Ghat → Bagore Ki Haveli → Lake Pichola
This works particularly well because Jagdish Temple, City Palace, Bagore Ki Haveli and Gangaur Ghat are all relatively close to one another.
One important point: Temple timings can change during festivals and special religious occasions, so if you’re planning your visit around a specific aarti or on a particular date, confirm the timing locally that day.
🌊 Gangaur Ghat: Udaipur’s Lakefront Gathering Place
Gangaur Ghat is one of the most charming and culturally important spots on the banks of Lake Pichola, located right beside Bagore Ki Haveli. It is more than just a photography point—it is a place where Udaipur’s daily life, traditions and religious celebrations come together by the water. Broad stone steps lead down to the lake, surrounded by historic havelis, temples and old buildings that give the area its traditional character.
Morning is peaceful and ideal for a quiet walk, while late afternoon and sunset offer beautiful light, with the City Palace and surrounding buildings glowing across the lake. During festivals such as Gangaur and the Mewar Festival, the ghat becomes especially lively with colourful processions, music, traditional performances and decorated idols, making it an important part of Udaipur’s cultural identity.
If you’ve already taken a boat ride on the lake, our Lake Pichola boat ride guide covers timings and pricing for that separately.

🌸 Gangaur Festival & Mewar Festival Celebrations
Gangaur is one of Rajasthan’s most important traditional festivals and is especially significant for women. The name comes from Gan (Shiva) and Gaur (Gauri/Parvati) and celebrates the divine union of Shiva and Parvati, symbolising love, marriage, prosperity and the arrival of spring. Married women traditionally pray for the wellbeing of their husbands, while unmarried women pray for a good life partner. The celebrations continue for several days with mehndi, traditional songs, colourful clothes, prayers and processions carrying beautifully decorated idols of Isar and Gauri.
In Udaipur, Gangaur is celebrated as part of the Mewar Festival, usually around March or April, depending on the Hindu lunar calendar. The celebrations become especially spectacular toward the end, when a colourful procession carrying the decorated idols moves through the old city and reaches Gangaur Ghat on Lake Pichola. Here, the atmosphere comes alive with folk music, traditional dances, decorated boats and cultural performances, creating one of the most beautiful festival scenes in Udaipur. Since the dates change every year, it is best to check the current festival schedule with Rajasthan Tourism before planning a visit around Gangaur.
Why visit both together
Jagdish Temple and Gangaur Ghat sit close enough to combine easily, and they complement each other well:
- Jagdish Temple → religion, architecture, centuries of continuous worship.
- Gangaur Ghat → lake views, local rhythm, festivals, everyday Udaipur life.
Between the two, you get both the formal, historic Udaipur and the lived-in, everyday version. Add Bagore Ki Haveli next door, and you’ve got a compact cluster worth two to three hours on foot.
A walking route: City Palace to sunset boat ride
If you’re planning a half-day in the old city, this sequence works well:
- Start at City Palace in the early afternoon.
- Walk to Jagdish Temple, just outside the palace gates.
- Continue through the old city lanes toward Bagore Ki Haveli.
- End at Gangaur Ghat for sunset views over Lake Pichola.
- If timing allows, close the day with a sunset boat ride on the lake.
This route moves you from royal history to religious heritage to local culture to the lakefront, roughly in that order. For the wider trip, our best time to visit Rajasthan guide and Jaipur to Udaipur sightseeing route guide can help you fit Udaipur into a longer Rajasthan itinerary.
