This City Palace Jaipur guide covers everything you need before you go. It sits right in the heart of the Pink City. This palace is beautiful combination of Mughal and Rajput architecture and still the important part of the present royal heritage of jaipur. Part of the complex is still home to Jaipur’s former royal family, so it feels alive, not just historic.

A quick history of City Palace

Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II founded Jaipur, and he laid the foundation of City Palace too. Construction ran from around 1729 to 1732. He built it as a royal residence and an administrative centre, not as a defensive fort like many other Rajasthan monuments.

Later rulers kept adding to the complex. Each one left behind a new courtyard, gateway, or decorated hall. That’s why the palace you see today feels layered, almost like a timeline of Jaipur’s royal history carved in stone and paint.

Things to see inside City Palace

The complex is large, so it helps to know what to look for before you walk in.

Mubarak Mahal: This Mahal was once used as a reception hall for royal guests. Now days it built in museum galleries with royal costumes, Pashmina shawls, silk saris, Sanganeri textiles and other historic collections on display.

Chandra Mahal: This seven-storeyed building is the palace’s most recognisable structure. Parts of it are still a private royal residence. Visitors can see select floors only through the paid Royal Tour, which we’ll cover below.

Pritam Niwas Chowk:It is the one of the most beautiful courtyard of the palace. Its four magnificient gateways designs represents four seasons and different Hindus denities, making them an important part of the palace’s artistic heritage. The peacock gate is particullarly one of the most popular photography spot.

Diwan-I-Khas: It is also known as Sarvato Bhadra, was an important space associated with the royal court. The area was used by the Maharaja for meetings, discussions, and receiving important guests. Its open courtyard design, elegant pillars, and traditional decorations create a grand royal atmosphere. The area also contains historic objects connected with Jaipur’s royal heritage.

Maharani’s Palace: Maharani’s Palace was traditionally associated with the women of the royal household. Now days it holds many great things of Rajput weapons and historic arms, including swords and other traditional weapons. The palace also features beautifully decorated ceilings and traditional architectural details, giving visitors an insight into both the royal lifestyle and the military heritage of Rajasthan.

Ticket prices are set by the City Palace Museum and can change, so always confirm the latest rates before your visit. As of now, here’s what to expect for Indian nationals and residents.

The Museum ticket covers the City Palace courtyards and galleries. The Composite Ticket adds Jaigarh Fort and the Royal Cenotaphs, so it’s worth it if you’re covering more ground that day. Concession rates apply to students, children, senior citizens, and defence personnel, with valid ID.

Note that the Museum at Night slot is temporarily closed as of this writing, so check current status before planning around it.

The Chandra Mahal Royal Tour

If you want to go beyond the standard museum route, the Royal Tour takes you into select areas of Chandra Mahal itself. It currently costs ₹4,000 per adult for Indian nationals and residents, and includes a personal guide plus refreshments. It’s a splurge, but it’s the only way to see inside this part of the palace.

City Palace timings

The museum is open daily from 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM, with the last tickets sold at 6:00 PM. It stays open seven days a week, with one exception: it closes on Dhulandi, the second day of Holi. The Royal Tour follows the same hours.

Best time to visit City Palace Jaipur

October to March is the best window. Jaipur’s weather turns pleasant during these months, which makes walking through open courtyards far more comfortable.

Within a single day, timing matters too:

9:30–11:30 AM: Cooler air, softer light, and smaller crowds. Best for photos.
Late afternoon: A good option if you plan to combine the palace with shopping or sightseeing in the old city afterward.

Set aside 2 to 3 hours for a relaxed visit. Add extra time if you’re booking the Royal Tour.

How to reach City Palace and what’s nearby

City Palace sits inside Jaipur’s walled Pink City, so it’s well connected by public transport — the nearest metro station is Badi Chaupar on the Pink Line. Autos and taxis are widely available too, and if you’re short on time, you can combine your visit with nearby landmarks.

Hawa Mahal, a short walk away
Johari Bazaar, Jaipur’s famous jewellery market

Tip: First-time visitors often combine City Palace, Jantar Mantar, and Hawa Mahal in a single morning. It’s an efficient way to see three of Jaipur’s biggest landmarks without much travel time in between.
