Where is Chandratal and why is it called the “Lake of the Moon”?

Chandratal lies in the upper Chandra Valley, close to Kunzum Pass, which connects the Lahaul and Spiti regions. Although it is commonly included in Spiti Valley itineraries, the lake is technically on the Lahaul side. Its name means “Lake of the Moon”, inspired by its distinctive crescent shape. The lake’s clear blue water stands out beautifully against the surrounding barren mountains and green summer meadows, creating a dramatic high-altitude landscape.

How to reach Chandratal

Chandratal can be approached from both Kaza and Manali. From Kaza, the route generally passes through Losar and Kunzum Pass, with Himachal Tourism listing the lake about 98 km from Kaza. From the Manali side, the route passes through the high-altitude terrain of Lahaul before reaching Batal, from where a roughly 14-km jeepable road branches towards the lake. Because road conditions can be rough and seasonal, a sturdy vehicle and an experienced mountain driver are strongly recommended.

The final stretch: parking and the walk to the lake

The final approach to Chandratal is part of the experience. Vehicles can travel along the jeepable road towards the lake, but visitors should expect to leave the vehicle at the designated parking area and continue on foot. Himachal Tourism also notes that an alternative approach is a longer walk from Kunzum Pass, taking around two hours. At an altitude of about 4,300 metres, even a short walk can feel surprisingly tiring, so walk slowly, take breaks and allow yourself time to enjoy the landscape rather than rushing to the lakeshore.

Best Time to Visit Chandratal

The main travel season for Chandratal is generally from mid-June to early October, although the exact opening and closing dates can change each year depending on snowfall, snowmelt and road conditions. July and August offer greener meadows and easier access, while September is often considered one of the best months for clearer weather, fewer crowds and crisp mountain views. By October, temperatures drop quickly and the possibility of road closures increases.

Permit and Entry Rules for Chandratal

Before travelling to Chandratal, check the latest Himachal Pradesh government and local administration requirements, as entry procedures, vehicle restrictions and fees can change with the season and road conditions. Since Chandratal is a protected wetland and part of an environmentally sensitive high-altitude landscape, travellers should carry valid identification, follow checkpoint instructions and keep some cash for local payments. Camping Near Chandratal: What’s Allowed

Chandertal Wetland is a Ramsar-designated wetland, recognised for its ecological importance, so protecting the lake and its surrounding environment is an important part of visiting responsibly. Camping should be done only in designated or authorised camping areas, rather than directly beside the lakeshore. Avoid littering, loud music and activities that disturb wildlife, and carry your waste back with you. Himachal Tourism also advises visitors to use designated trails and leave no non-biodegradable waste behind.

Altitude and Acclimatisation

At around 4,300 metres, Chandratal is high enough for altitude sickness to become a genuine concern. It is better to acclimatise at a lower-altitude stop before heading to the lake. Once there, walk slowly, stay hydrated and avoid alcohol. Pay attention to symptoms such as severe headache, persistent nausea, dizziness or worsening breathlessness. If symptoms become worse rather than improving, descend to a lower altitude and seek medical help instead of pushing ahead.

What to pack and a realistic one-day plan

There are no ATMs between Manali and Chandratal, and shops thin out fast once you leave Kaza or Manali. Pack before you go:

Heavy jacket or down layer for freezing nights
Thermal innerwear and warm socks
Sunglasses, sunscreen, and lip balm
Water, snacks, and personal medicines
Cash, power bank, and offline maps

For a day visit, start early from Kaza or your overnight stop near Batal, reach the parking area by mid-morning, and give yourself a couple of unhurried hours at the lake before heading back. Road and weather conditions change quickly at this altitude, so keep the rest of your schedule flexible.
