One thing we noticed during our Kerala and Tamil nadu trip was that pure vegetarian restaurants with separate kitchens are not very common. However, the situation was still much better than what we had experienced during our Meghalaya trip, where vegetarian choices were even more limited.

Since we were staying at Poovar Island and Resorts, we couldn’t find a good pure vegetarian restaurant nearby. So, for dinner, we decided to drive to Ananda Restaurant, located around 8 km away on the road between Kovalam and Poovar.

A Simple Family Restaurant

Ananda turned out to be a nice family restaurant. We chose to sit in the regular non-AC dining area, although the restaurant also has a separate air-conditioned hall for families and tourists.The restaurant was simple, comfortable and perfect for a relaxed family dinner.

The Food

We decided to order only South Indian dishes. Altogether, we ordered around 10–12 different items, and thankfully every dish turned out to be tasty. Another thing we immediately noticed was that the food wasn’t as spicy as what we had during our previous dinner. That made the meal much more enjoyable for all of us.

Travel Tip from Our Experience

If you’re travelling with children or family members who prefer mildly spiced food, this restaurant is a good option.

Filter Coffee Was a Pleasant Surprise

Although Kerala is generally known more for its tea than coffee, we were still hoping to find a good cup of filter coffee during our trip. Ananda didn’t disappoint. The filter coffee here was really good and was the perfect way to end our meal.

Cost of the Meal

For our family, the complete dinner—including around 10–12 dishes and filter coffee—cost approximately ₹500. Considering the quantity, taste and quality of the food, we felt it was very reasonably priced.

Our Experience

Overall, we had a very good experience at Ananda Restaurant. The food was tasty, the prices were reasonable, the coffee was excellent and the restaurant was a convenient option for anyone staying around Poovar or Kovalam. If you’re a vegetarian travelling in this part of Kerala, Ananda is definitely worth considering for a comfortable family meal.
