Nahargarh Fort Jaipur sits on the edge of the Aravalli Hills, watching over the Pink City below. History of Nahargarh Fort Jaipur

Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur, built Nahargarh Fort in 1734. He needed a strong northern defence for his new city, and the Aravalli ridge gave him the height advantage he wanted.

The fort’s role changed over time. Rajasthan Tourism notes it was expanded again in 1868, and later rulers added palace buildings inside its walls. During the events of 1857, the fort sheltered Europeans living in the region, giving it a small but real place in colonial-era history.

By the late 1800s, Nahargarh had become something softer than a war fort. Sawai Madho Singh commissioned Madhavendra Bhawan, a summer palace built purely for royal comfort. That shift, from watchtower to retreat, is what makes Nahargarh interesting to walk through today.

What does the name Nahargarh mean?

Nahargarh is usually translated as “abode of tigers.” It fits the rugged hill it stands on.

There’s also a local legend behind the name. According to the story, the spirit of a Rajput prince named Nahar Singh Bhomia kept disturbing construction work, and builders could not finish the fort until they built a small temple in his honour. Local tradition holds that a tantrik was finally called in to perform rituals, and the spirit agreed to leave on the condition that the fort be named after him. Whether you read it as folklore or history, it adds an extra layer of story to the walls.

Architecture and Madhavendra Bhawan

Nahargarh mixes two building styles. Thick stone walls and bastions reflect its military beginnings. Painted courtyards and palace rooms show what it later became.

Madhavendra Bhawan is the highlight. It holds twelve matching suites built for the queens, with one larger suite for the king at the head, and corridors linking every room are covered in delicate murals. Walk through slowly. The symmetry, the faded paintwork, and the quiet courtyards say more about royal life than any plaque can.

Outside the palace, the fort also has a wax museum, a sculpture park, and viewpoints scattered along the ramparts.

Best time to visit Nahargarh Fort

October to March is the most comfortable stretch. Days are mild, skies are usually clear, and the evening views are at their best.

Summer (April–September) turns the Aravalli Hills hot by midday. If you’re visiting then, go early or wait until late afternoon.

Time of day matters as much as season:

• Early morning – Morning is suitable for visitors who prefer cooler temperatures. The fort is generally quieter earlier in the day. Morning light can be excellent for photography
• Afternoon – Afternoon visits allow visitors to explore the palace and fort before sunset. However, summer afternoons can be uncomfortable because of high temperatures.
• Sunset – Sunset is one of the most popular times to visit Nahargarh. The fort’s elevated position provides excellent views across Jaipur. The changing colors of the sky create attractive photography opportunities. Arrive before sunset so you have enough time to explore the fort and find a good viewpoint.
• Evening – Jaipur’s lights become visible as darkness approaches. The night-time view from the hill is one of the memorable aspects of a Nahargarh visit.

How to reach Nahargarh Fort

Nahargarh sits about 20 kilometres from Jaipur’s city railway station and bus stand, up a winding hill road.

There’s no direct public bus route to the top, so most visitors take a taxi, an app-based cab, or a private car. Some travellers combine the climb with an auto-rickshaw for part of the way, though availability varies.

Nahargarh pairs naturally with two other hill forts:

• Jaigarh Fort – Jaigarh Fort is another important hilltop fort associated with Jaipur’s history. It is particularly known for its strong military character and extensive fortifications. Visiting Jaigarh and Nahargarh together can provide a useful comparison between military and royal-retreat architecture.
• Amber Fort – Amber Fort is one of the most spectacular historical attractions near Jaipur. The palace complex contains courtyards, royal residences, gardens, temples, and decorative interiors.
