Komic day trip: your complete 2026 guide

A Kaza to Komic day trip takes you to one of the highest villages in the world you can actually drive to. Komic sits at roughly 4,587m in Spiti Valley, surrounded by bare mountains and total silence. The village itself is tiny. What makes the trip special is the drive, the altitude, and a 14th-century monastery clinging to a canyon edge. Most people don’t visit Komic alone. They pair it with Langza and Hikkim on one loop out of Kaza. This guide covers the distance, the route, what to do once you’re there, and how to stay safe at that height. If this is your first time in the region, our Spiti Valley travel guide is a good starting point.

How Far Is Komic from Kaza?

Komic is approximately 18–20 km from Kaza, depending on the route and road conditions. Although the distance may seem short, the journey takes time because the road climbs steadily into the high-altitude terrain. In good conditions, the drive can take around 45 minutes to 1 hour, but rough patches, narrow stretches and photo stops can make the journey longer.

As you leave Kaza, the landscape changes quickly. The greener patches around the Spiti River gradually disappear, giving way to barren slopes, rocky terrain and vast open valleys. With every turn, the altitude increases and the scenery becomes more dramatic, making the drive itself an important part of the Komic experience.

The Kaza to Komic Route: What You’ll See

The journey to Komic is more than simply reaching a high-altitude village—it is a scenic drive through some of the most striking landscapes of Spiti Valley. Most travellers visit Komic as part of a Langza–Komic–Hikkim circuit, with two common route options:

  • Kaza → Langza → Komic → Hikkim → Kaza
  • Kaza → Hikkim → Komic → Langza → Kaza

Both routes allow you to experience the three famous high-altitude villages in a single day. Langza is known for its giant Buddha statue and fossil-rich landscape, Komic for its spectacular high-altitude setting and Tangyud Monastery, while Hikkim is famous for its post office.

The road can be narrow, steep and rough in places, so travelling with a local driver who knows the mountain roads is generally the more comfortable option. More than the distance itself, the changing landscape, high altitude and panoramic mountain views make the journey from Kaza to Komic an unforgettable part of a Spiti Valley trip.

Top Things to Do in Komic Village

Komic is a small high-altitude village, but its dramatic landscape, Buddhist heritage and peaceful atmosphere make it one of the most memorable stops around Kaza. Rather than a long list of tourist attractions, Komic is best experienced slowly, allowing you to appreciate its remote Himalayan setting.

Tangyud Monastery: The main attraction of Komic is Tangyud Monastery, a distinctive fortress-like Buddhist monastery built on the edge of a deep canyon. It belongs to the Sakya tradition of Tibetan Buddhism and offers beautiful views across the surrounding mountains and towards Kaza. Visitors can admire its traditional architecture and spiritual atmosphere, while remembering to maintain silence and ask before taking photographs inside.

Explore Komic Village on Foot: Take a slow walk through the tiny settlement to see traditional homes, prayer flags, stone walls and small agricultural fields. The village has only a small number of households, so walking around gives you a genuine glimpse of how local communities live in one of Spiti’s harshest environments. Because of the altitude, even a short walk can feel tiring, so take your time.

Enjoy the Mountain Views: Komic’s open surroundings provide excellent opportunities for landscape photography. The barren brown mountains, deep valleys, clear blue skies and scattered villages create the classic cold-desert scenery that makes Spiti so distinctive. There is no need to search for a particular viewpoint—simply stepping away from the houses can give you impressive panoramic views.

Experience the Silence and Stargazing: One of Komic’s biggest attractions is its sense of isolation and quiet. With very little artificial light and a remote location, clear nights can offer spectacular views of the stars, making Komic an appealing place for stargazing and night photography.

Combine Komic with Langza and Hikkim: Most travelers visit Komic as part of the popular Kaza–Langza–Komic–Hikkim circuit. This allows you to experience three very different high-altitude villages in one trip—Langza for its giant Buddha statue and fossil-rich landscape, Komic for Tangyud Monastery and mountain views, and Hikkim for its famous post office.

Best Time for a Kaza to Komic Day Trip

Komic is a seasonal destination, with road access largely dependent on snowfall and mountain conditions. The most suitable period for a day trip is generally June to September, when roads are more accessible and the weather is comparatively comfortable for sightseeing. May and October can also be possible in favourable conditions, but weather can change quickly and road access may be affected by snowfall. From late autumn through winter, heavy snow and extreme cold can make the upper stretches difficult or inaccessible. Always confirm the latest road conditions with your driver or a local contact in Kaza before setting out.

Altitude and Acclimatisation: What to Know

Altitude is the most important thing to consider before visiting Komic. At around 4,580–4,587 metres, Komic is significantly higher than Kaza, so visitors should allow their bodies time to adjust before heading to the higher villages. Spending at least a day or two acclimatising in Kaza is a sensible approach, particularly if you have recently arrived in Spiti from a much lower altitude.

During the trip, walk slowly, stay hydrated and avoid unnecessary physical exertion. Pay attention to symptoms such as headache, dizziness, nausea, unusual tiredness or breathlessness. If symptoms become severe or continue to worsen, descend to a lower altitude and seek medical assistance. Being young or physically fit does not completely protect you from altitude-related illness.

How to Reach Komic and What to Carry

The easiest way to visit Komic from Kaza is by local taxi or private vehicle with an experienced mountain driver. The road includes steep and rough sections, and local drivers are familiar with the route and changing conditions. Motorcycles are possible for experienced riders, but the high altitude and road conditions require extra caution. Public transport is limited and schedules can change, so it is not the most convenient option for a sightseeing day trip.

Before leaving Kaza, carry everything you may need because Komic has very limited facilities. Pack:

  • Warm jacket and thermal layers
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen and a cap
  • Water and light snacks
  • Basic medicines
  • Sufficient cash
  • Power bank and offline maps

There is no fuel station in Komic, so fuel should be arranged in Kaza beforehand.

A Realistic Kaza to Komic Day Trip

Start from Kaza after breakfast and follow the high-altitude road towards Langza. Spend some time around the Buddha statue and explore the village before continuing towards Komic. At Komic, visit Tangyud Monastery, take a slow walk through the village and enjoy the spectacular cold-desert scenery. You can then continue to Hikkim before returning to Kaza, completing the popular Langza–Komic–Hikkim circuit.

There is no need to follow a rigid hour-by-hour schedule. Leave Kaza in the morning, keep enough time for photography and sightseeing, and allow road conditions and your body’s response to the altitude to determine the pace. This makes the journey more comfortable and lets you enjoy the high-altitude landscape rather than rushing from one village to another.
