Suchindram Thanumalayan Temple: Our Experience with a Temple Guide

While travelling between Thiruvananthapuram and Kanyakumari, one temple that I would strongly recommend adding to your itinerary is Suchindram Thanumalayan Temple.

The temple is located around 10–12 km before Kanyakumari, making it an easy stop on the way.

Although we had originally planned to spend only a short time here, it eventually became one of the most memorable temple visits of our trip, mainly because we decided to hire a guide.

Temple Timings

During our visit, we learnt that the temple remains closed every afternoon.

The temple timings were approximately:

Morning to around 12:30 PM
Reopens at around 4:00 PM

However, one important thing to note is that although the temple opens at 4:00 PM, the main Thanumalayan deity is accessible only from around 5:00 PM. So, if you’re planning to experience the complete temple, it’s better to schedule your visit accordingly.

Good to Know

If you reach exactly at 4:00 PM, you’ll be able to enter the temple, but you may still have to wait before the main deity is accessible.

Before Entering the Temple

Although Suchindram Thanumalayan Temple is located in Tamil Nadu, it follows many traditional Kerala (Malayali) customs because this region was once part of the Travancore Kingdom.

One of the first things we noticed was the dress code. Men are required to remove their shirts before entering the temple, following the customs observed in many Kerala temples.

After entering, the temple priests prepare large flower garlands (around 70–80 feet long) and sell them to devotees who wish to offer them to Lord Hanuman. While handing over the garland, they also briefly explain its significance and share a little about the temple before devotees proceed for darshan.

We had entered the temple soon after it reopened at around 4:00 PM. Since our guide was expected to arrive later, we spent some time exploring the temple premises on our own.

Why We Hired a Guide

By chance, we met a Rajasthani family who had already hired a temple priest to explain the temple. Since we wanted to understand more about South Indian temples, we requested to join them.

Our guide arrived at around 4:40 PM, and from that point onwards our experience completely changed. Looking back, I think hiring the guide transformed our visit.

The temple is more than 2,300 years old, and without someone explaining the history and significance, we would have missed many fascinating details hidden throughout the temple complex.

Travel Tip from Our Experience

If it’s within your budget, I would definitely recommend hiring a knowledgeable guide or temple priest here. The architecture is impressive on its own, but understanding the stories behind it makes the visit far more meaningful.

The Main Deity

The temple is mainly dedicated to Lord Shiva, but one of its most unique features is the representation of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh together.

According to what our guide explained, there are three Shiva Lingas representing the three deities, situated at the base of a sacred tree.

These lingas are worshipped early every morning at around 5:30 AM.

After the morning rituals, they are covered with a golden three-faced idol, which resembles the form of Lord Dattatreya. This was one of the most fascinating aspects of the temple for us because it is not something commonly seen in other temples.

Highlights of the Temple

As we walked through the temple, our guide explained several unique features that we would probably have overlooked on our own.

Some of the highlights included:

The approximately 85-foot Hanuman statue.
The famous seven musical pillars, each producing a different musical note.
The enormous Nandi, which according to our guide is considered one of the largest in India.
Various sculptures depicting Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh along with their symbolic representations.

The temple is filled with historical and religious details, and having someone explain them made the visit much more enjoyable.

The Musical Pillars

One feature that fascinated us was the set of seven musical pillars.

At first glance, they look like ordinary stone pillars, and if you don’t know where they are, it’s easy to walk past them without noticing anything unusual.

Our guide demonstrated how gently tapping each pillar produces a different musical note. To hear the sound clearly, you actually need to place your ear close to the pillars. It was one of those experiences that we would have completely missed had we explored the temple on our own.

Was the Guide Worth It?

The guided tour covered almost every important section of the temple.

We first entered through the main entrance and visited the shrines dedicated to Vishnu, Brahma and Mahesh, before proceeding towards the magnificent 85-foot Hanuman statue.

The guide then demonstrated the famous musical pillars and finally took us to the shrine of the main deity, where he explained the significance of the three-faced golden idol representing the combined form of the three deities.

The entire guided tour took around 35 minutes.

One additional benefit of hiring the guide was that he spoke to one of the temple priests and arranged a close-up darshan at the Vishnu shrine while a special ritual was being performed.

However, the guide also suggested that we participate in the ritual, which cost us around ₹1,000 per family.

Looking back, I personally didn’t feel that spending this additional amount added much to our experience. If you’re primarily interested in exploring the temple and understanding its history, you can politely decline such optional rituals without feeling that you’re missing out.

For the guide himself, we paid around ₹1,000, which was shared between two families, making it quite reasonable. If you’re travelling as a smaller group, you can always discuss and negotiate the guide’s charges beforehand.

Personally, I felt the guide fee was completely worth it because the explanations added a completely different perspective to the visit. The optional ritual, however, is something you can comfortably skip if you’re travelling on a budget.

Our Experience

Overall, Suchindram Thanumalayan Temple was one of the most informative temple visits of our Kerala and Tamil Nadu trip.

The temple itself is beautiful, but what really made the difference was understanding its history, symbolism and architecture through the guide.

If you’re travelling between Thiruvananthapuram and Kanyakumari, I would definitely recommend including this temple in your itinerary. And if possible, hire a guide.
