Begin your day with an early start from Leh. After checking out from your hotel, ensure all your belongings are packed as you embark on a captivating journey westward.
Set out on the legendary Leh-Srinagar highway towards the heart of the Sham Valley. The drive to the first major stop, Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, is approximately 25 km and takes around 45 minutes.
En route, visit the following attractions:
- Hall of Fame - A memoir that represents the sacrifice and bravery of soldiers during 1961 war. It is sort of a museum that is dedicated to war.(Closed on Mondays)
- Gurudwara Pathar Sahib – A revered Sikh pilgrimage site, believed to be visited by Guru Nanak Dev. Its unique boulder, imprinted with a human form, is a spiritual marvel.
- Magnetic Hill – Experience the optical illusion where vehicles appear to defy gravity and move uphill on their own, a fascinating natural phenomenon.
- Confluence of Indus & Zanskar Rivers (Sangam Point) – Witness the spectacular meeting of the turquoise Indus River and the muddy Zanskar River, creating a striking contrast of colours.
From the Sangam Point, you will continue your journey deeper into the Sham Valley region. The drive from Sangam Point to the turn-off for Alchi Monastery is relatively short, and the detour to Alchi village is approximately 20 km, taking about 40 minutes.
Upon arrival in the Sham Valley region, explore its magnificent monasteries:
- Alchi Monastery – Unlike other monasteries built on hilltops, Alchi Gompa is situated on flat ground. It is renowned for its ancient murals and frescoes that date back to the 10th century.
The drive from Alchi back to the main highway and then onward to Lamayuru is approximately 70 km, which will take around 1.5 to 2 hours, offering dramatic changes in landscape.
Explore the majestic sights at the westernmost point of your day's adventure:
- Lamayuru Monastery – One of the oldest and largest monasteries in Ladakh, known for its stunning architecture perched dramatically on a cliffside.
- Moonland Landscape – Located near Lamayuru, this unique geological formation resembles the lunar surface, offering breathtaking views and incredible photo opportunities.
After a full day of exploration and breathtaking sights, begin your return journey to a designated village within the central Sham Valley area (such as Alchi or Likir or Lamayuru) for your overnight stay. Check in to your hotel and unwind, reflecting on the day's incredible journey through Ladakh's cultural and natural wonders.
