Ladakh is a high-altitude cold desert-plateau, located in the northernmost part of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Since 2019, it is separated from J&K and has been named as Union Territory. Geographically, the region also includes Lahaul and Spiti, Baltistan and Aksai Chin. One of the largest geographical regions in the country in terms of area, it is also one of the most sparsely populated. A population of only about 260000 against a land area of around 86904 sq km is a direct result of its remoteness, mostly barren land and extreme climatic conditions.
Ladakh is a Union Territory of India, and it has two districts, each with its own administrative headquarters. However, Leh is often referred to as the main capital of Ladakh because it is the larger and more prominent of the two.
Yes, Ladakh is generally safe for tourists, including solo travelers, women, families, and foreigners. During the Ladakh Travel, you would notice that many established are run and managed by Ladakhi Women. However, because of its unique geography, high altitude, and proximity to international borders, there are a few important safety and health considerations.
Choose the route that suits your spirit – by air, by road, or by adventure.
Ladakh is not just a destination—it’s a journey. Whether you're short on time or seeking the thrill of high-altitude road trips, Ladakh offers multiple ways to reach its magical landscapes. Here’s how you can get there:
By Air – Fly to Leh (Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport - IXL)
The fastest and most convenient way to reach Ladakh is by air. Leh Airport, located at 3,500 m (11,500 ft), connects Ladakh to major Indian cities throughout the year. There are Daily flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Srinagar. Flight time from Delhi is around 1.5 hours. IndiGo, Vistara, Air India, and more airline operate in the reason.
⚠️ Tip: Due to the sudden altitude gain, it’s important to rest in Leh for at least 6 hours before beginning any sightseeing or travel.
By Road – Scenic & Adventurous Routes
Two iconic highways lead into Ladakh, both open from May to October depending on weather and snow clearance.
🛤️ Srinagar → Leh (via NH1)
Most recommended for first-time travelers
This route offers:
Why it's best:
Manali → Leh (via NH3) Most scenic, best done at the end of your trip
This route features:
Why it’s more challenging:
Why it's still popular:
Due to high-frequency Volvo buses from Delhi to Manali, it’s a budget-friendly choice, especially for backpackers.
By Train?
There’s no direct train to Ladakh. However Closest stations:
Arrive via Srinagar, return via Manali.
You’ll acclimatize better, enjoy both routes, and make the most of Ladakh.
Rule of thumb: If you're even a little unsure or uncomfortable about managing health risks at altitude, it's better to postpone the trip until the child is older. Ladakh will always be there. Why do we say so? Let me explain
Why it is risky to travel with young Children
Due to the tough terrains and sensitive border areas, it is mandatory for incoming travelers to register when visiting Ladakh. The Ladakh administration has strict policies in place for both Indian and foreign tourists.
While no permit is required to enter Leh, Indians must obtain an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to visit several key areas such as:
These permits can be obtained online through the official Ladakh administration website or in person at the District Collector’s Office in Leh.
Foreign nationals also require Protected Area Permits (PAP) for similar regions and must apply through a registered travel agent.
Foreign nationals also require Protected Area Permits (PAP) for similar regions and must apply through a registered travel agent.
PAP is provided only for groups instead a single traveller. It is not possible to get the permit online, only registered travel agent can get the permit from the District Collector Office.
Yes, you should be cautious when traveling to Ladakh with people aged 50 and above, especially if they have health conditions. Age alone isn’t a strict limitation, but high altitude (11,500+ ft) can pose challenges for older adults, even those in good general health.
1. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)
Older adults may be less responsive to oxygen fluctuations and may have a slower acclimatization rate.
Symptoms can escalate quickly: breathlessness, fatigue, headache, confusion, or chest pain.
2. Existing Medical Conditions
Seniors with heart disease, asthma, COPD, high blood pressure, diabetes, or prior strokes are at greater risk.
Low oxygen levels and extreme temperatures may trigger complications.
3. Limited Medical Facilities
Leh has decent hospitals, but remote areas like Nubra, Pangong, and Tso Moriri lack proper medical care.
Emergency evacuation is logistically tough and expensive.
Pre-Trip Medical Checkup
Acclimatization
Carry Medical Essentials
Drinking Alcohol is perfectly fine, if you have acclimatize in the environment. However it is avoidable at-least first two days of your trip. To acclimatize, it is essential to hydrate your body, on the contrary, Alcohol dehydrate the body. So once you are settled, then only you must start partying in Ladakh.
Traveling to Ladakh requires special health considerations due to its high altitude, thin air, and remote geography.
High Altitude Sickness (Acute Mountain Sickness - AMS)
Reduced oxygen at elevations above 10,000 ft (Ladakh ranges from 9,800 ft in Leh to over 24,000 ft at passes like Uming-La).
AMS Causes various problems. Here is a list common problems faced.
Leh has hospitals and army clinics, but remote areas like Pangong, Tso Moriri, and Nubra have only basic aid posts.
The most convenient airport for traveling to Ladakh is: Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (IXL), Leh
As of the current flight schedules, Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (IXL) in Leh, Ladakh is well connected by direct flights from several major Indian cities. The following cities offer direct flight services to Leh:
Delhi (DEL)
Mumbai (BOM)
Srinagar (SXR) (Direct flights available on select days)
Jammu (IXJ) (Occasional direct flights or short connecting options)
Yes, medical assistance is available in Leh, and to a more limited extent in Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake region. However, the quality, availability, and level of care vary significantly across these locations due to geographic remoteness and infrastructure constraints.
When traveling to Ladakh, it is essential to pack clothing that accommodates rapid and significant temperature fluctuations, due to the region’s high altitude, thin air, and dry climate. Daytime temperatures can be mild to warm, while nights often drop to near-freezing levels—even during summer months.
To ensure comfort, safety, and adaptability, travelers should follow a layered clothing strategy:
👕 Recommended Clothing for Ladakh Travel:
1. Base Layers (Innerwear) - Lightweight, moisture-wicking thermal wear (top and bottom) & Cotton or merino wool options for breathability and warmth
2. Mid Layers - Full-sleeve t-shirts or fleece jackets & Woolen sweaters or sweatshirts to retain body heat
3. Outer Layers - Windproof and waterproof jacket (preferably insulated) & Down or padded jackets for higher altitudes like Pangong or Khardung La
4. Bottom Wear - Comfortable jeans, track pants, or trekking trousers OR Thermals or fleece-lined pants for cold nights
/ Scarf or neck warmer to protect against cold winds / Sunglasses with UV protection to combat strong sunlight and glare / Sun hat or cap for daytime exposure / Woolen socks and a few pairs of cotton socks / Sturdy, broken-in trekking shoes or warm boots
In Ladakh, mobile network connectivity is limited and location-dependent, primarily due to the region’s challenging terrain and remote infrastructure. However, among the available options, BSNL , Airtel & Jio Postpaid services offer the most reliable coverage, especially in and around Leh.
If you are traveling solo or on a budget
If you have flexible timing and don’t mind basic comfort
If you wish to experience local travel alongside residents
Public transportation in Ladakh, including buses operated by the Jammu & Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation (JKSRTC) and shared taxis, does exist and can be used for intercity travel. However, its reliability and convenience depend largely on the traveler’s itinerary, comfort expectations, and time flexibility.
🚍 1. Buses: - Government-run buses connect Leh to popular destinations such as Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, Tso Moriri, Kargil, and Zanskar.
These services are budget-friendly and offer a local experience but are often infrequent, with fixed departure times (usually early morning).
Advanced bookings are rare, and seats may not always be available during peak tourist season
Buses may lack modern amenities (e.g., heating or reclining seats), and road delays due to weather or military movement are common.
🚕 2. Shared Taxis: - Shared taxis (usually SUVs) are widely used by both locals and tourists, especially for routes like: Leh ↔ Nubra Valley OR Leh ↔ Pangong Lake OR Leh ↔ Tso Moriri
Operated by local unions, they are more flexible than buses and depart when full — usually early morning.
Fares are moderate and shared among 4–6 passengers.
While economical, shared taxis may follow tight itineraries, leaving little time for sightseeing en route.
If you are traveling with senior citizens, young children, or individuals with respiratory or heart conditions
If your itinerary involves rapid altitude gain (e.g., flying into Leh and proceeding to Pangong/Nubra within 1–2 days)
If you are unsure about how your body will adjust to high altitude
When traveling to Ladakh, carrying sufficient cash is important due to the limited banking infrastructure and ATM availability, especially in remote areas beyond Leh. Although ATMs are present in Leh town, their reliability can vary due to power outages, network issues, or cash shortages. In more distant locations such as Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, and Tso Moriri, ATMs are non-existent, and cash transactions remain the primary mode of payment.
💵 Cash Carrying Recommendations: Carry adequate cash in Indian Rupees (INR) to cover all your expenses for the entire trip, including accommodation, food, transport, permits, entry fees, and emergencies.
Per Day Minimum Expense is - 500 Per Person
When planning a trip to Ladakh, it is strongly recommended to book hotels and camps in advance rather than relying on on-the-spot bookings. Due to Ladakh’s remote location, limited accommodation infrastructure, and the high influx of tourists during peak seasons (May to September), availability can be highly constrained.
🏨 Reasons to Book in Advance:
Limited Accommodation Options
Remote Location & Connectivity Issues
Safety and Comfort

Safety Assurance: Especially for first-time travelers or group tours, agents provide emergency support and contingency plans.
Cost & Time Efficiency: Agents often have tie-ups with accommodation providers and can secure better rates and confirmed bookings.
For travelers who want to experience Ladakh without rushing, the ideal trip length is 5-6 days.
In 5-6 Days We Can Cover - Central Ladakh (Leh) , North of Leh (Nubra Valley) & East of Leh (Pangong Lake)
Rest , If you want to Cover It Completely.
It Take 9-10 Days For North , East , South - East , West
Ladakh is not only known for its stunning landscapes but also for its deeply spiritual and culturally rich traditions. Travelers should show respect for the local Buddhist culture by following a few key customs. It is customary to walk clockwise around monasteries, stupas, and mani walls, and one should always remove shoes before entering a monastery or someone's home. Visitors should avoid touching or pointing their feet toward religious objects or statues, as this is considered disrespectful. Photography is generally allowed, but one must always ask permission before clicking pictures of monks, locals, or inside religious spaces — some monasteries may charge a small fee for it. The local greeting "Juley" is used widely and conveys hello, thank you, and goodbye, and using it often with a smile is appreciated.
When staying in homestays or guesthouses, travelers should remove their shoes before entering, and it is polite to accept tea or snacks offered by the hosts. Dressing modestly is important — even in warm weather, it is respectful to wear clothing that covers shoulders and legs, especially in villages and monasteries. Loud behavior, public displays of affection, and playing loud music in serene areas should be avoided. Nature and wildlife are sacred to Ladakhis; littering, picking plants, or disturbing animals like marmots or wild asses (kiangs) is strongly discouraged. Lastly, travelers should avoid stepping over religious items or people sitting on the ground, and should refrain from touching anyone on the head, as it is considered sacred. In Ladakh, patience, humility, and mindfulness go a long way — a calm and respectful attitude ensures a warm and enriching experience.
