Once you've checked into your hotel, the most crucial activity for your first day in Leh is acclimatization. Leh is situated at a high altitude (around 11,500 feet or 3,500 meters), and it is vital to rest and allow your body to adjust to the reduced oxygen levels. We highly recommend spending the majority of your day relaxing at the hotel, avoiding strenuous activities, and staying well-hydrated.

 

Afternoon & Evening Leisure in Leh:

In the late afternoon or early evening, once you feel adequately rested, you may opt for a very gentle stroll to explore the immediate surroundings of your hotel.

Begin your day with an early start from Leh. After checking out from your hotel, ensure all your belongings are packed as you embark on a captivating journey westward.

 

Set out on the legendary Leh-Srinagar highway towards the heart of the Sham Valley. The drive to the first major stop, Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, is approximately 25 km and takes around 45 minutes.

 

En route, visit the following attractions:

  • Hall of Fame - A memoir that represents the sacrifice and bravery of soldiers during 1961 war. It is sort of a museum that is dedicated to war.

Journey from Leh to Nubra Valley - Scenic Drive via Khardung La with Diskit Monastery Visit

The drive to Nubra Valley is a spectacle in itself, divided into two distinct parts by the iconic Khardung La pass:

  • Leh to Khardung La: Approximately 39 km, an ascent of about 1.5 - 2 hours. This part of the journey takes you through winding mountain roads with stunning views of the Indus Valley.
  • Khardung La to Nubra Valley: Approximately 80-90 km, a descent of about 2.5 - 3 hours. After crossing the pass, the landscape transforms into dramatic valleys and eventually, the fertile plains of Nubra.

 

After a thrilling drive, you will reach the verdant Nubra Valley. Here, immerse yourself in the unique culture and natural beauty of the region.

  • Diskit Monastery: Explore the largest and oldest Buddhist monastery in Nubra Valley, dating back to the 14th century. Perched atop a hill, it offers magnificent views of the valley and houses a 32-meter-tall statue of Maitreya Buddha.

Upon arrival in Sumur, immerse yourself in the tranquil spiritual atmosphere of the village.

 

Sightseeing in Sumur:

After exploring Sumur, continue your journey further north to Panamik. This segment from Sumur to Panamik is approximately 20 km and will take about 45 minutes to 1 hour, offering more spectacular views as you head closer to the northern frontier.

Pangong to Nubra Valley - Scenic Drive via Shyok Valley & Bactrian Camel Experience

The drive from Pangong to Nubra Valley via the picturesque Shyok Valley is approximately 150-170 km and typically takes around 5-7 hours, depending on road conditions and the number of photo stops you make along the way. This route offers a stark contrast of landscapes, from the serene blue of Pangong to the rugged moonscapes and verdant patches of the Shyok River basin.

 

Upon arrival in Nubra Valley, check into your pre-booked hotel or guesthouse. After refreshing yourself, set out to explore the unique attractions of this high-altitude desert.

Later in the day, explore the following attractions in Nubra Valley:

  • Diskit Monastery: Perched on a hilltop, this is the oldest and largest monastery in Nubra Valley, offering panoramic views of the valley and featuring a magnificent 106-foot tall statue of Maitreya Buddha.

Depending on your flight schedule, you will then be transferred to Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (IXL) for your onward journey, carrying with you cherished memories of Ladakh's pristine beauty and unique culture.
