Once you've checked into your hotel, the most crucial activity for your first day in Leh is acclimatization. Leh is situated at a high altitude (around 11,500 feet or 3,500 meters), and it is vital to rest and allow your body to adjust to the reduced oxygen levels. We highly recommend spending the majority of your day relaxing at the hotel, avoiding strenuous activities, and staying well-hydrated.

 

Afternoon & Evening Leisure in Leh:

In the late afternoon or early evening, once you feel adequately rested, you may opt for a very gentle stroll to explore the immediate surroundings of your hotel.

  • Khardung La to Nubra Valley: Approximately 80-90 km, a descent of about 2.5 - 3 hours. After crossing the pass, the landscape transforms into dramatic valleys and eventually, the fertile plains of Nubra.

Ensure you have completed any final explorations around Tso Moriri before beginning this long travel day.

 

En route, immerse yourself in the majestic landscapes and visit the following attractions:

  • Kiagar Tso: Shortly after leaving Tso Moriri, you'll pass by this smaller, yet equally captivating lake, often frequented by migratory birds.
  • Tso Kar Lake: A truly unique high-altitude salt lake, also known as the "White Lake" due to the salt deposits on its shores. It's a vital habitat for various bird species, including the endangered Black-necked Crane.
  • Pang: A customary stop for tea and snacks, offering a brief respite amidst the rugged terrain.

Journey from Jispa to Manali via Atal Tunnel - Scenic Drive through Majestic Landscapes

Your day begins in Jispa, known for its serene landscapes and clear blue skies, as you set out towards Manali, a total distance of approximately 100-110 km.

 

The first leg of your journey will take you from Jispa to the South Portal of the Atal Tunnel, covering about 75-80 km, which typically takes around 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on road conditions and stops. From the South Portal of the Atal Tunnel to Manali, it's an additional 25-30 km, taking approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. The total driving time for the day will be around 3.5 to 4.5 hours, not including sightseeing stops.

 

En route sightseeing highlights before reaching Manali:

  • Deepak Tal: A small, shimmering lake near Darcha, offering serene views and a perfect spot for a quick photo break.
  • Keylong: The administrative center of Lahaul and Spiti, a bustling town offering glimpses into local life and culture. You might stop for a quick tea break.
