On day of this Spiti Valley tour, we start our epic Himalayan road trip today and start driving to Sangla. With the Baspa river magically weaving itself through the forested slopes, this exquisite 95-kilometer stretch of the Sangla Valley is a sight to behold. Sangla to Kalpa - Explore Kamru Fort, Rakcham & Chitkul

After breakfast first visit kamru fort ,batseri village , baspa river further we shall drive to the beautiful town of Kalpa via Rekong Peo, (approx. 51 kms/ 3 hours’ drive) the district headquarters. One can enjoy spectacular views of the sacred Kinner Kailash Peak, one of the most beautiful peaks in the Himalayas on the way. Kalpa → Tabo

Kalpa to Tabo - Scenic Journey through Nako and Desert-Mountains

Today we drive towards Tabo. The landscape changes from green-mountains to desert-mountains. We continue our journey through Kinnaur and enter the Hindustan-Tibet Highway - often called the world’s most adventurous road. We drive via Puh, which is the last fuel station on this road before Kaza. After a fuel refill, we drive towards Nako, a village situated at 3600 m, passing by the Khab Sangam (confluence of Spiti and Sutlej rivers), and visit the Nako lake. We can have lunch at Nako and later visit the Gue village and see the 500 year old Mummy at the Monastery there. Finally we head to Tabo for the night.

Tabo → Kaza

Explore Tabo to Kaza - Visit Tabo Monastery, Dhankar Village & Scenic Pin Valley

We start the day with a visit to the Tabo monastery - the oldest continuously functioning monastery in India. If time permits, we can climb up the stairs in the mountain behind the monastery to see the famous meditation caves of Tabo. We then head to Dhankar. Perched high above the confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers, in a hidden bowl, is the tiny hamlet of Dhankar. We will visit the old monastery here (if open). The view of the valley from the village is not to be missed. We then head to Pin Valley National Park. Imagine a national park with an abundance of animals and birds, with some rare plant varieties, a river that gushes when it isn’t frozen and trekking opportunities for the adventure-seekers. The Pin Valley promises all this and more. We make our way to Kaza by late afternoon and check-in to our hotel. Overnight at a hotel in Kaza.

Local Sightseeing Kaza - Discover Langza, Hikkim & Komik

Wake up in the magnificent Pin valley and after breakfast head towards Kaza and then further to explore the nearby villages of Langza (The fossil village), Komic, Hikkim & Key monastery. Each of these villages are famous for special reasons. Hikkim claim to have the worlds highest post office. Komic is the worlds highest village to be connected with a motorable road. While Langza is known as the Fossil village of India due to the abundance of marine fossils found here. After sightseeing, head towards Kaza, will cover key monastery and chicham bridge. for the evening stay.

Local Sightseeing Kaza - Visit Key Monastery & Kibber Village

After breakfast at the hotel in Kaza, you can explore the Kaza market in the morning then head towards the Key Monastery for sightseeing. After Key monastery, head towards the Kibber village famous for it’s wildlife sightseeing during winters. Enjoy your day in and around Kibber village and it the eveningcome back to the hotel for dinner and a soothing night stay. Tip: It is located on the periphery of the Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary. So, you can visit the sanctuary if time permits (charges extra)

Kaza to Nako Via Tabo - Scenic Drive through Spiti Valley with Monastery Visit

Start your day with an early breakfast in Kaza. After checking out from your accommodation, prepare for a captivating journey through the rugged and beautiful landscapes of the Spiti Valley, heading towards Nako via the ancient village of Tabo. Any remaining sightseeing in Kaza should ideally be completed the previous day or very early this morning before departure.

 

The first leg of your journey takes you from Kaza to Tabo, covering approximately 50 km and taking around 2 hours to drive, depending on road conditions and stops.

En route, you will visit the following attractions:

  • Dhankar Monastery: Perched dramatically on a cliff overlooking the confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers, this ancient monastery offers breathtaking panoramic views. Explore its old prayer halls and admire the unique architecture.

 

Upon arrival in Tabo, immerse yourself in the spiritual heart of the region.

  • Tabo Monastery: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, often referred to as the "Ajanta of the Himalayas." This 11th-century monastery complex is home to stunning ancient murals, stucco sculptures, and numerous temples that have been remarkably preserved over centuries. Spend time exploring its sacred chambers and feeling its profound tranquility.

 

After your visit to Tabo, continue your scenic drive towards Nako. This segment covers approximately 65 km and typically takes around 2.5 hours, offering more spectacular vistas of the cold desert mountains.

En route from Tabo to Nako, make sure to stop at:

  • Giu Monastery (Mummy Temple): Take a short detour from the main highway to visit this unique monastery which houses the remarkably well-preserved 500-year-old mummy of Sangha Tenzin, a Buddhist monk.

 

Finally, arrive at the picturesque village of Nako, nestled on the edge of the Kinnaur district.

Upon reaching Nako, the rest of your day can be spent exploring its serene beauty:

  • Nako Lake: A tranquil high-altitude lake, surrounded by willow and poplar trees. Take a leisurely stroll around its perimeter and enjoy the serene reflections of the surrounding mountains.
  • Nako Monastery: Explore the ancient monastery complex within the village, which dates back to the 11th century and features several temples with intricate artwork.

Check into your accommodation in Nako for an overnight stay, reflecting on the day's incredible journey through Spiti's cultural and natural wonders.

 

Note: No Sights will be visited twice even though mentioned twice in the itinerary, and no alternative sight would be covered. We might have mentioned the multiple so that traveller does not miss it.
