Head to Narkanda from Chandigarh Via Shimla

Embark on a captivating journey from the city of Chandigarh to the serene hills of Narkanda, with a charming stopover in the queen of hills, Shimla. This road trip covers approximately 175 km and typically takes around 5-6 hours of driving time, not including stops.

 

Begin your day by departing from Chandigarh towards Shimla. The drive from Chandigarh to Shimla spans roughly 110 km and takes about 3 to 4 hours, navigating through scenic mountain roads and small towns.

 

En route to Shimla, consider visiting the following attractions:

  • Pinjore Gardens: Just outside Chandigarh, these 17th-century Mughal gardens offer a refreshing stop.
  • Timber Trail, Parwanoo: Experience a thrilling ropeway ride offering panoramic views of the Shivalik range (optional, time permitting).
  • Kalka-Shimla Railway viewpoints: Catch glimpses of the UNESCO World Heritage toy train track.

Kalpa → Tabo

Kalpa to Tabo - Scenic Journey through Nako and Desert-Mountains

Today we drive towards Tabo. The landscape changes from green-mountains to desert-mountains. We continue our journey through Kinnaur and enter the Hindustan-Tibet Highway - often called the world’s most adventurous road. We drive via Puh, which is the last fuel station on this road before Kaza. After a fuel refill, we drive towards Nako, a village situated at 3600 m, passing by the Khab Sangam (confluence of Spiti and Sutlej rivers), and visit the Nako lake. We can have lunch at Nako and later visit the Gue village and see the 500 year old Mummy at the Monastery there. Finally we head to Tabo for the night.

Tabo → Kaza

Explore Tabo to Kaza - Visit Tabo Monastery, Dhankar Village & Scenic Pin Valley

We start the day with a visit to the Tabo monastery - the oldest continuously functioning monastery in India. If time permits, we can climb up the stairs in the mountain behind the monastery to see the famous meditation caves of Tabo. We then head to Dhankar. Perched high above the confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers, in a hidden bowl, is the tiny hamlet of Dhankar. We will visit the old monastery here (if open). The view of the valley from the village is not to be missed. We then head to Pin Valley National Park. Imagine a national park with an abundance of animals and birds, with some rare plant varieties, a river that gushes when it isn’t frozen and trekking opportunities for the adventure-seekers. The Pin Valley promises all this and more. We make our way to Kaza by late afternoon and check-in to our hotel. Overnight at a hotel in Kaza.

Local Sightseeing Kaza - Explore Langza, Komic & Key Monastery

First, head towards the iconic Key Monastery. This drive from Kaza is approximately 12 km and takes around 30-40 minutes, offering breathtaking views of the Spiti River.

 

Highlights of Your Day:

  • Key Monastery (Ki Gompa): Perched majestically atop a hill, this is the largest and most famous monastery in the Spiti Valley. Explore its ancient temples, intricate murals, and collection of rare thangkas, and soak in the serene monastic life.

  • After an enriching visit, continue your drive towards the villages of Langza and Komic. The journey from Key Monastery, often via parts of the Kaza road, to Langza is approximately 25-30 km and can take about 1 to 1.5 hours due to the winding mountain roads.
  • Langza Village: Known as the "Fossil Village" of Spiti, Langza is famous for its ancient marine fossils. Spot the towering Buddha statue overlooking the valley and enjoy panoramic views of the Chau Chau Kang Nilda peak.
  • Komic Village: Perched at an astonishing altitude, Komic is one of the highest motorable villages in the world. Visit the Tangyud Monastery, explore the local culture, and enjoy a warm meal at a local cafe.

 

As the afternoon draws to a close, begin your scenic return journey to Kaza, which is roughly 18-20 km from Komic and takes about 45-60 minutes. Reflect on a day filled with spiritual insights, ancient history, and unparalleled natural beauty in the high Himalayas.

Local Sightseeing Kaza - Visit Key Monastery & Kibber Village

After breakfast at the hotel in Kaza, you can explore the Kaza market in the morning then head towards the Key Monastery for sightseeing. After Key monastery, head towards the Kibber village famous for it’s wildlife sightseeing during winters. Enjoy your day in and around Kibber village and it the eveningcome back to the hotel for dinner and a soothing night stay. Tip: It is located on the periphery of the Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary. So, you can visit the sanctuary if time permits (charges extra)

Kaza → Tabo

Kaza to Tabo - Visit the Historic Dhankar Monastery

Our first destination on day will be the Dhankar (sometimes spelled as Dankhar or Dhangkar) monastery. It is a 900-year-old monastery built on a valley spur. The word literally translates to Fort (Kar) built on a mountain (Dhang). A 23km long drive on NH505 will take us to a point from where we take a right turn and continue the drive on a serpentine road connecting road (Sichling-Dhankhar Gompa). The Dhankar monastery offers vantage views of the valley and the confluence of the Pin and Spiti Rivers. After spending some time at the monastery, we descend down to reach NH505, take a left turn, and continue driving on the highway. At Attargo, we drive over the Attargo bridge and start our road journey into the Pin valley.
